Here is something you can use on ceiling of on wall. If you use a Star grid on a wall then frame around it so it looks like a view screen that he peering out into the stars in space

Ralph Lauren makes a nice

Also does he like Star wars or such? go on eBay and get a few laser guns or lightsabers or a movie costume for kids like a storm trooper or something hang them on wall frame them under a nice piece of plexiglass like in museums and have it light
Get some space ship models and if you go for the star ceiling hang them from the ceiling.

Why not build him a captains chair too?

Try using some medium blue colours, or purple colours instead of black for the space scene and if you're going to paint planets try using bright colours. If you really need some good paint colour ideas check out your local Home Depot in the paint section and look for colours labeled neutrals. Ask someone who works there to help you if you cannot find it. Remember that neutrals are best because they give the right balance of cool and warm. Neutrals are the safest way to go.
