It doesn't have to be the most current edition. I have the el cheapo knockoff, "Photo Studio", that came with my HP computer, but the layers feature on it won't let me put color UNDERNEATH my black & white linework. At least haven't been able to figure out how to. (I'm an old cartoonist trying to learn new tricks).

If you are a student, buy it through your university. It is often majorly discounted. My university sold students Windows 2000 for $5.

How about an another program that is completely free for the most recent version and is very much like Photoshop?

You can download Gimp for both Windows and Mac.

It looks potentially overwhelming at first, but it's not that complicated, promise.:)

Go here:
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html

Then download both The GIMP for Windows and GTK+ 2 Runtime Environment..

You then need to install the latter first. You won't have to do anything, just double click on the file. And next you install Gimp.

It has features like Photoshop, but it's free.

If you would like for it to look more like Photoshop (regarding menu structures and such) you can install Gimpshop:
http://www.gimpshop.net/

But this is not necessary in order to run Gimp.

Enjoy!
