Because they want to sit were their mom sits. My cat does the same thing. She just likes to get attention that way. And the seat is also warm after you get up so he may like the heat.

The three previous answers are right! Cats are warnth-sluts, as well as liking to be close to their people. Wny shouldn't he flop down where you were if you're no longer there? Or perhaps he's waiting for you to return, so you can pet and cuddle him. Then again, sometimes they're just teasing you.
Bear in mind that, while people tend to prefer a little distance with others, cats like the warmth and comfort of closeness--when they want it, of course. He isn't trying to usurp you, just to enhance his happiness-level.

Because it's warm and cats love warmth. Possibly your cat really likes you - if your the person who feeds the cat, it will regard you as a parent figure and will feel safe being near you - and it will be able to pick up your scent on the chair.

If it's always the same seat, then it might be his favorite seat, or if it's everywhere you go, it's just the warmth from the seat.

MIne does that all the time. They do like the warmth. Just sit back down next to her/him. Sometimes they just want your company to. If they don't they'll just get back down.
