It's our brain requesting more oxygen. The yawn takes in more air, speeds up our blood so that more oxygen can be delivered quickly to the brain and increase our alertness.

okay this may seem weird but we actually yawn because we have low oxygen not because we are tired! I know it seems weird but like when you get tired your breathing changes and you take in less oxygen and may yawn! hope that helped

To release extra gases. It helps us relax. That's why we mainly do it at night.
