If he can't handle the truth, then he wouldn't be able to handle much else.
I'm dealing with the same thing. I confessed to the girl I've known more than half my life, and she's not interested, as I suspected, but I feel fine about it. She deserves the best, and I am not that, and it's unfortunete this guy you know reacted the way he did. It's not your fault.
You were honest with him, that's all you needed to do.

It sounds like he is a bit imature so probably anything you said to him would make him mad. You have said your peace so leave it at that and press on, and don't worry so much about his reaction. He will grow up someday
