A Toy Dog isn't the best choice for a family with kids. All small dogs are harder than average to housebreak - small dogs have small bladders and need to go out about every four hours. Many tiny dogs tend to be spoiled, yappy little ankle-biters if they're not raised properly. My cousin used to breed them - you could visit there for eight hours and they NEVER shut up! Shih Tzus, Maltese, Yorkies and other long-haired Toy dogs need lots of brushing to keep the coat from matting. They tend to be fragile and easily stepped on - a broken leg in a Yorkie can cost you a bundle for the delicate surgery. They are not ornaments to show off in a Prada shoulder bag - they are living breathing animals that need care and training. If you get one from a really good breeder and raise it properly, you can have a great dog.
There are some people who try to breed them even smaller and call them "teacup" dogs - that's a fancy way of charging a higher price for a dog with more health problems.
For the most fun dog, I'd recommend one of the Sporting breeds for a kid (but NOT a Weimaraner or a Dalmatian!) My all-time favorite mid-sized dog for kids is the English (or Welsh) Springer Spaniel. They require some grooming, but don't shed too much, are generally great with kids and easy to train. Females are a little bit easier than males, but either should make a terrific pet. They will need a good thirty minute walk every day.
Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and ENGLISH Cocker Spaniels (NOT American!) are great too and need less exercise. They are small, sweet and quiet.
Vizslas, Setters, Labs and Goldens are usually great with kids but they're bigger and are very boisterous until they are about two. Labs shed a LOT.
I'd also suggest reading some really good books on training. Try not to do it randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also! These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com

Whatever breed of puppy you decide on DON'T go to a pet shop or buy one off the internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are kept in deplorable conditions. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there. These "breeders" have figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.
Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money.

I would go with the Yorkie. When I was a kid growing up at home, we had a Yorkie and he was a good family dog and relatively easy to care for. My ex father-in-law had a Shih Tzu that was rather high strung, and as it got older, it became mean, snapping, growling, and nipping at people. As for the Pomeranian, I have 2 friends that had Pomeranians and they both had a very difficult time house-breaking them - as I have never owned this breed of dog myself, I'm not sure if the problem was with the dog itself, or the person trying to train them. I am by no means an expert on any of these breeds of dogs, and would suggest you do some research on each of them before making a decision. I myself own 2 Siberian Huskies, but I would definitely not recommend these dogs unless you do a lot of research on them first - they require a lot of work and exercise and a VERY secure yard. They can also be stubborn, which requires a lot of patience. Good luck with your choice!

Pomeranian of course. They may be a little barkey but they can be trained not to bark incessantly and they are very smart. The Yorkie are cute but are very hard to house break and sometimes they don't house break no matter what you do. Shih Tzu are cute also but have a lot of medical problems like their eyes and ears. So definitely get a Pomeranian they look like little teddy bears. If you live in or around New York I know a couple of breeders including myself. So e-mail me for more info.

Yorkies are Very Smart, Curious, and Loving. They genuinely care about you...if you're sick they'll lay with you. If you cry they'll console you...They are still terriers though and depending on upraising they can be a bit 'yappy'. I think Yorkies are the cutest dogs, of course I'm biased because I have a 4 year old male. I hope he lives a long time!
Shih Tzu's are crazy little buggers lol. They are a lot of fun to play with and very smart...they require a lot of maintenance though.
Pomeranians I don't really know about.

Definately get a yorkie!!!
I have only 3 now, but I once owned around 10/15 because we bred them. They are amazing dogs. They also have many pros to them:
No one is allergic to yorkies
They do not shed
Great disposition
Extremely intelligent
The only cons I can think of is that you have to be sure to keep them groomed pretty well. Not every week, but a brushing once in a while is needed. And maybe their teeth as well.
Whatever you do, make sure you do not get one from a pet shop. these dogs can have personality "defects" from the trama done to them at puppy mills which is where most of the come from. It may cost more, but it will be best in the long run. Even if you choose another dog, go to a breeder!!!
Lots of luck!!!

I am usually not a fan of Toy breeds but Yorkies are great. They are Terriers and have the Terrier disposition. They are lively, curious and intelligent. They are also better natured than Shitzus and Pomeranians.
You may also want to consider a Maltese. They are very intelligent, lively dogs. Unlike most Toy breeds, Maltese are tendentially not "yappy" dogs. Another plus is that they really are cute. I have to admit that I have liked most Maltese that I have known.
If you want a real dog...get a Neapolitan Mastiff (Fluffy from the first Harry Potter movie is a Neo).

Hi There....Have you considered a bichon frise? If not, there are what they call Designer Breeds. For instance a Shih-Poo, cross between a shih-tzu and poodle, usually toy.
My favorite is the yorki-poos. Do a google search, you will find alot of info.
Best Wishes

I would go with either pomeranian or yorkie..maybe u can get both..Its hard, but to tell u the pomeranian is SO cute when its wet.. I was at the beach once and the water was cold and it was swimming and it jumped on me and it was shaking. It was SO cute..
o its hard...my cousin has a yorkie and it is hard to take care of it. It is trouble and thing, but cute.. I would buy a pomeranian..y? because they are cute.. they are not hard to take care of. They aren't that hard to train. they will love their owner. and cuddle with you all the time.

A dog should be trained on how to eat, walk with you, not to bark, potty training and sleep on its place etc. You can teach anything to your puppy, dogs get trained easily with some good instructions. If you want some good training tips visit https://tr.im/MXChN
If properly trained, they should also understand whistle and gesture equivalents for all the relevant commands, e.g. short whistle or finger raised sit, long whistle or flat hand lay down, and so on.
It's important that they also get gestures and whistles as voice may not be sufficient over long distances and under certain circumstances.
