You can make a reservation for an airline and put it on hold - this gives you 24 hours to make it to the airport and pay for the ticket in cash or by check if they allow it.

You'll need your confirmation code (6 alpha characters in the US) to pull up the reservation to pay for it - and you'll need a government issued photo ID card.

If you call the airline, they will reserve it. You can then pay either at the airport or send the money in (but they have to get it within 5 days). I've done this with Northwest Airlines before...it also helps if you need someone else to pay your ticket

Book on that airline through a travel agent.
