Sometimes the shoe is on the other foot. It's the adult kids trying to make the parents feel guilty over some stupid thing that happened in the past.

Sacrifice...it is the word I have heard more often than I can count. Both my mother and mother in law use this word to explain why they are in the situations they are in (in debt, bad marriage, no career). I allowed it to make me feel guilty for a long time---until I had a child. Every decision I make is for the good of the family. I don't "sacrifice" my nights out. I CHOOSE to stay in. I don't sacrifice money for daycare. I CHOOSE to work rather than be an at home mom. These choices allow me to look at my daughter with love instead of resentment. I think many parents look back with regret when they consider the past. They blame their children for why they didn't go to college or move to another city. In reality, THEY made the choices they did--not their children. I love my mom and mother in law, but when they start throwing the word sacrifice around I simply tell them to come down off the cross. No one asked them or made them climb up there.

My mom doesn't but I have known mothers of exes who do. It's all about control and the feeling that if they lose control, they'll also lose their child....and they must keep their child - their baby - the baby that they carried or chose and then raised with all the love and care that they had - they must keep that child safe.
It's fear. Plain and simple and I have no advice to help you out of that but I wish you luck.

Oh, Yeah!
While my mother was alive, I used to call her the "Guilt Queen".
I would like to point out that it doesn't seem to matter what nationality they are, some parents just love to lay on the guilt.
