I'm looking to buy a decent used car in the Southern Illinois area. My husband and I are not looking to spend alot of money as we cannot afford a large monthly payment. Likewise, we have practically nothing saved back for a down payment. Does anyone have any ideas?

You can search at

www.ebay.com

www.cars.com

www.autotrader.com

Or look for the websites of specific dealerships in your area.

If you are concerned about payment,
you can always go to www.roadloans.com
and get pre-financed for a vehicle, then you have your budget set before you go to shop.

You have no money, but yet you still can get a car. You may need to have at least $500 cash, but go talk to a decent local banker anyway. They'll want you to put up something. He/She can pre-qualify you for a certain amount of money. Also, you could go to a new car dealership with lots of financing choices for a "certified" used car.
Even new cars can be cheaper to buy than a used. Remember they have rebates and incentives to cover the no down payment.
(Stay away from "Tote-The Note" car lots. They sell junk cars/charge too much interest and you don't own the car till its paid.) Don't forget to check on car insurance. Your insurance could cost as much per month as the car payment. Good luck!
Let us know how it goes.

(I see what you mean about the 2 point morons--useless aren't they ?)

First you need to find a good, reliable, & reputable salesperson.
Please, talk to your friends, relatives, & neighbors.
Find out who they know & trust. & then let them find a vehicle that fits your needs & budget.

I have lot's of customers that call me all the time looking for the right deal for their friends.
Some times I have the right vehicle, sometimes it takes a little while for me to find it ( or for it to get traded in ) Either way, Referals from Happy Customers makes for more Happy Customers and that is why I have been in the business for so long. Lots of referals.

See if you can find a sales person in your area that does business in the same way.

I would to be able to help more but I'm not in sothern Illinois.
If you're willing to travel to the western suburbs of Chicago contact me & I'll direct you to my dealerships used car web page
so you can preview online my inventory before making the trip up north.
Hope this is better advice than your 1st 2 answers!
Good Luck!

www.autotrader.com, I have had good experiences with them, but my advice is to save for a small car and pay cash, like a focus or a cavalier.
