Because for one the shaft is shorter, therefore more controllable, secondly the club head has more loft, which generates more backspin than side spin. (that's why you probably hit your short irons a lot straighter than your longer ones.)

A 5 wood has more loft than a driver which puts less spin on the ball so if you have anything that resembles a decent swing it will have better results---I too usually hit my 3 or 5 wood rather than my driver. It is 50/50 when i do pull out the driver and I really hit both clubs about the same distance-------accuracy is better in my opinion

I don't even take my driver out. 5 wood is the only wood I go for. I don't practice drives that much. 200 yards is more then I will ever need. I go short, precise swings. I practice my puts all the time. That is what takes my time and concentration, that and the <30 yard game.

A 5-Wood has much more "loft" than a Driver. As a rule, the more loft a club has (wood or iron), the easier it is to hit.

farther with my driver, by about 100 yards, but i hit a slice with my driver and not with my 5 wood, so both are good.
