Heartworm comes from mosquitoes
tape worm comes from fleas
other types can come from eating stuff off the ground and eating dead nasty stuff or garbage.
If you give a monthly heartworm pill those will now kill most types of worms.

they can get worms very easily from simple things like eating grass... (the worm would have been pooped out by another dog - crawled up the grass and been semi dormant while waiting to be eaten - they are tiny at this stage but grow)
by eating other dogs poops
by eating fleas

somtimes when they are puppy, they get them from mommas milk. its perfectly normal and a treatment can be found over the counter. All puppies should be wormed by 6 weeks of age. Not worming can kill them.
