Often because none of the discussions about God satisfy an atheist as being truthful. Much of the discussion is based on what is written in the bible, which is a collection of writings that were written by man. Christians will claim that the bible is divinely inspired by God, but it still only a collection of writings. Also, the fact that God seems to be an absentee landlord letting his world go to ruin is another factor. A caring landlord would take care of his property.

Proof is a big thing that atheists want, and there are many beliefs, opinions and theories -- but no real proof. Just because something is written in a book does not mean it is absolute fact, regardless of what one has been taught. Who is to say that Moses really lived? Or Jesus? Or that they really did the things that were written about them? People tend to believe these things with faith, but there is also the concept of reality that many think of first.

All an Atheist is someone who has not yet found his or her truth. You need to be loving and accepting of this search for their truth. Not judgmental and defensive like many so-called christians are. Many who think of themselves as atheists just have trouble believing that a god that is supposed to be unconditionally loving could ever allow someone to be judged or punished.

This is a logical question that more christians need to seriously consider.

A question you might ask yourself is why does this search the athiests are on bother people so much?

If their own faith in what they believe in were strong these things would be irrelevant to them. There must be something about their belief system that they are uncertain about or the questions these atheists pose would not be troubling to them.

Think about this. It is the real key to finding the peace you seek on this issue. The insecurities we have do not originate external to the mind that believes in them. Remember this and it will help you.

Trying to understand is a good first step.

Love and blessings to you.

The only common thing among atheists is that some lack of belief in god(s) and others deny the existence of god(s).

Have you ever being told any story where you simply didn't believe it because it wasn't plausible? Well, if you've been gone through that, that's exactly my personal feeling, I am an atheist because I simply can't find the whole god concept, the interventionist god idea, to be a plausible story.

I applaud you! I love this question, there just seem to be too many closed minded believers on this subject.

To answer your question i am an atheist because in all of my experiences, and research i have found that religion is unnecessary. I have found no evidence for anything supernatural, in fact, i have found plenty of evidence to the contrary.

Religion seems to confuse people and though their hearts may be in the right place, the dogma becomes a vehicle for justification of wrongdoing in many cases. Religion seems to cause more problems than it solves, and anything good that comes from religion (charity, acts of kindness, etc.) can be attributed to humanity and would happen in a secular society as well.

I don't want to make this answer too long, but if you'd like to discuss any of this my contact info is in my profile.

I'm an Atheist because I read the bible and I learned about the history of when it was written. It was a really good idea back then. They didn't have anything like policemen or laws back then. It was a good way to help keep people acting kind to each other. Nowdays it is no longer needed.

People have a brain, they see, read, and decide.
Some agree with you, some don't. Some just don't know what to think. Some choose not to decide.
In the end, all make the choice they believe to be correct.

Which Jesus fan club are you a member of, and how did you come to believe that your club is His favorite? Are all the other Jesus fan clubs going to hell with the atheist, Muslims, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, and agnostics?

If you prayed, and God told you to kill someone in his name, would you obey?

I read in Genesis that the daughters of man married the sons of Giants and I went hmmmmmm.

One day I came home from a revival meeting and was blathering on to my dad about it and he said, "you really don't believe that shi*, do you?"

I was stunned, but I started thinking and learning. I learned how the books of the bilble translated, transcribed, and later were assembled by Constantine, who chose only books that back up empire

- they nearly squashed christ's message that acts are important, bringing in the stupid paul who says - oh you know all that talk of jesus' about being good? forget about it - just chant that you believe and you'll go to heaven! James the brother of Christ was outraged and called this DEAD FAITH -

I learned that the story about 'he who is without sin casts the first stone' wasn't even in the bible texts for 400 years. It's a cool story, but totally made up by a monk somewhere.

I learned that Mithra was constantine's god before he converted and that Mithra was born dec 25, died for our sins, and rose from the dead. I learned that Sumerian myths are very similar to genesis stories. I noticed how Zeus mated with an earth maiden to produce a savior, just like God supposedly did.

So, it became clear over years of study that the powerful try to make people believe in the supernatural so that they can control them (like bush has done to great harm to all of us.) They also push the supernatural because they do not want people listening to and following what Christ actually said. What a disaster for our militaristic, corporate state if people listened to Christ.

Anyway, just learning and studying makes it clear that the christian/jewish myths are just like the myths of every other land. I am not interested in believing in myths. Believing in the myths literally removes their power. I prefer life headon and I prefer these myths with their power intact.

To those people who worship imaginary skygods, this makes me an atheist. To me, their beliefs that myths are real is irrelevant to my life, except when they try to ruin our Bill of Rights.

God gave us FREE will, people have the right to choose what they believe or don't believe. The "God" depicted in the Bible is not something everyone chooses to believe as "true". Also Jesus told us to "DOUBT" and to seek truth for ourselves (not just take his word for it). Everyone seeks the truth their way, each person may go down a different path to find that truth.

Simply understand that you do not understand those who think differently from you, and give them the same freedom to choose as God has given them, and you will understand MORE than when you didn't even know you didn't understand

A believer
