Steffi! The simply answer is yes, but it is more complicated than the answer.
God does not help us to achieve what we want. If he did, the consequences would be disastrous. God wants us to be whole, sometimes this means going through a whole load of crap before we get sorted.
From my own experience I know that sometimes he leads us in to hard times, but ultimately for our good.
Most "religious" people use God as a good luck charm and attached him to what ever they are doing. That's why so many people outside church see the hypocrisy inside it.
Surely if God is God, then he know best and his purpose is important. How can I tell him what to do? My son trys to get me to let him stay up late, but I know at 6 years he needs to go to bed, or he will suffer.
We often think that because we are adults, we know better than God! In reality most of us are still petulant children :-)
Good question!
Just a thought that it is funny how many answer say God didn't help me so stuff him! Interesting contradiction.

Of course ur happy with what u believe in!!! If u sin, u don't have to worry about the punishment from God... so imagine, u can commit all kinds of murders, and if u r lucky, no man can catch u, and since u don't believe in God, there won't be "hell" either!!! wow... also, if u come home one day, and found ur place is up side down, u don't ask ur self who did it either... because events (like the creation of a person like yourself) don't have to have a creator.... wow... this is really so logical.... i hope ur really convinced with ur ignorance... now that said, u wouldn't know how may God help u, because if i tell u, that u can see while others are blind, or u r full, while others are starved, this would seem like a nonsense to as for u God doesn't exist....

God,dess works through me, inside me, and for me.
God,dess gives me vibrational hugs when I am down.
As do my Angels and Guardians.
I spent seven years Atheist.
I have my reasons.
However; I was in Catholic school from k-5 and already knew of the strength of the Mother Mary, I believed where my parents didn't. I had to drag them to Mass on Christmas. When you are young, your glass is small and it doesn't take much to fill. Can I interest you in a comedy? Watch Dogma, by my fave Kevin Smith. You'll hear her diatribe about the little glass and the big one. Now that you're older, and wiser to the evils in the world, your glass is bigger and the same amount of liquid doesn't fill it anymore... Anyway, I had my reasons to become Atheist, and those years taught me much. I would not take them back. Sometimes the best way to know God is to find that She's been there all along, and just see where that leads. You will be shown, if you pay attention, and be mindful.... Blessed Be.

No point in trying to convert anyone who is happy because the irony is that God IS that happiness - therefor you are already there!!
What most people dont understand is that God is not the old man that looks down on us - no - god is all that we see, hear, do, say, think and are! God is all of creation the very essences of everything that is!
At the most micrscopic everything is pure energy - it is that pure energy that is all that is. It is that pure energy that man calls god!
Interestingly enough athiest is also a word created for people to put themselves into a catagory to avoid another catagory. People would be much happier if they could just live, love and just be.

The truth is taht you are going to get a lot of different answers, but most of it will be just stuff that people have been spoon fed for many years. I was once religious, then one day my eyes where opened. I realized that 90% of religious people know nothing more then what they are told. They have no real thought about religion, other then to quote what they have read or what was told to them. You can not understand a world with God without first being willing to believe in what you are told and not to listen to what you know. To me God is someone you blame when something goes wrong ("well it is God's will) and someone you foget when things go right ("look at what I did today")

It's odd that you find it impossible to believe in a higher being. Some see it as impossible to not believe in one. I, however, do not see either as an impossibility. As far as what you're interested in knowing, perhaps it would be good for you to try reading a book called "Conversations with God." I haven't yet read it but it's on my reading list and it seems to be a book that would answer your question of what people feel about God.

I was raised as a Catholic and I do believe in God, but I have strayed because of recent issues in the church. I am also incredibly interested in Buddhism because the principles are very close to my heart. My version of God helps me to believe that I am never alone and that there is a purpose to everything that happens to us, although I am personally responsible to use the brain that He gave me. Strife and troubles strengthen my willpower and heart - God helps me understand how to make all my past experiences work in tandem with my current situations. I must say that there seems to be something at work, because if I handle something badly, brashly, or without heart, it seems I repeat the problem, in one form or another, until I find the correct way inside myself to handle it. - I suppose that is the jist of it - for me, God means hope and unconditional love - the tools to keep going and trying your best to be a good person, which I believe is all that he asks for.

I think you have answered your own question.
You are happy and live a society where you are relatively safe, know you will eat tomorrow, where rational thought is the general rule.
I don't believe in god either, but I know people who do. Many people live terrifying lives, walking a knife edge of despair, want and fear. God is their only support. They have not just him but the other believers as their support.
There is also spiritual fear, the fear that evil spirits will enter your life, either spontaneously or deliberately be put there by others. Many people seem to feel subject to such influences. Many think that god and the church can protect them from these malign influences.

Does anyone believe in God until they are in trouble or want his help, I believe in God but don't go to church, its just odd that when things are going great everyone says Thank God but when the chips are down God is blamed for everything, sorry but no man can be in two places at any one time, give the man a break.
