Sleep is the regular state of natural rest observed in all mammals, birds, and fish. Sleep is not actually "unconsciousness," but rather, it is characterized by a reduction in voluntary body movement, decreased reaction to external stimuli, an increased rate of anabolism (the synthesis of cell structures), and a decreased rate of catabolism (the breakdown of cell structures). Therefore, since consciousness is literally the awareness of the surroundings, being asleep is just an altered state of consciousness, as opposed to being unconscious. It is heavily influenced by circadian rhythms and by hormonal and environmental factors. Sleep performs a restorative function for the brain and body as evidenced by the myriad symptoms of metabolic dysfunction that result when animals are deprived of sleep.

The function of sleep in health and in disease is being increasingly studied in specialized sleep laboratories throughout the world. Not only insomnia but more recently elucidated sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and narcolepsy are evaluated in such facilities. The increasing prevalence of sleep disorders is likely to be a function both of more sophisticated diagnostic tests and the disruption of the normal day-night cycle in modern societies.

different people require different amounts of sleep. Some get by on 6 while otherd need 9. but if she is only sleeping 2-3 hours a night there is a problem. could be anything from food and caffeine to ADHD to depression to..... just about anything.

Nobody has ever died from lack of sleep but our body needs rest to restore damage done by the preious day. The brain processes what went on through dreams and the body gets to relax and replenish itself allowing the heart to slow down. If a person does not go into a deep sleep they are probably exhasuted all the time without really realizing it. they become more prone to accidents, are less productive at work and are more likely to indulge in large amounts of coffee and other addictions to allow them to function. this becomes a viscious cycle. She needs to talk to a doctor if she really 'never sleeps'. or at least study things like
- what time of day does she stop drinking coffee
- does she do things to relax before going to bed
- is she depressed - or manic?
- is she having trouble focusing
- is she following a proper diet

Imagine the experiences you have though out the day as files written and then thrown into a big pile. When you sleep this pile is organized and ordered for better recall. This is why it is important but not vital. The brain works better after some sleep.

It gives the body a chance to rebuilt from the activities of the day and the mind to dream (which acts like a purge pile) and deal with the events of the day

Sleep is necessary for overall health. Our bodies and our brains get tired and need some down time to re-energize. Without proper sleep, people can become rundown and more susceptible to diseases like colds and flus. We also aren't as mentally alert and can't function as well.
