We must conserve fuel.
We will not run out of all fuel. If we do run out, we would have mastered the technique to use other energy sources.
Just one example:
During world wars lots of tuck were converted to start on diesel(but not in USA) and then switch to coal gassified vapours. These trucks had condenser in the front of the radiator, and a stoker furnace(with a boiler) on the passenger side, in those days truck operation was two men operation driver and helper, helper would jump out of the truck and guide the driver as needed, when the truck was converted to coal gassification he would put coal or wood in the boiler's fire box.
Lots of theses gassification plants were so under powered that truck would stop, and cleaner/helper would clean the fire box every now and then, but must perform this task before taking on any incline.
I have see one mesedise benz car with this power plant conderser in the front boiler in the back. It must have been used for short trips, cleaning was done as needed at the end of the trip.
The fact is, it can be done and we have done it. Actually to-day we can do it more efficiently with computer and conveyor, we are not doing it because gas is available, convenient and cheaper to use, even when in some countries people are already paying $10/- per gallon.
Every body buys gas at international commodity listed price but each country and states within the countries have different taxes and tariffs.
New crude oil is constantley geting made but we are using it faster then it is geting made, thats what experts are thinking. Lots of crude is not yet discovered. Volcanic and earthquack activities do help bringging/shiffting the unreachable reseves close to reachable deepth but same activity can make known reserve disappeare.
It is not all that glommy, but it make sense to conserve.

A lot of people think hydrogen is the solution because it is so abundant. However hydrogen is only found in compounds with other elements and it requires energy to isolate it. Hydrogen is only a means of storing energy, not a source of energy.
The most common way of extracting hydrogen is from hydrocarbons. The other byproduct of this is our friend Mr. carbon dioxide. If you're not familiar with him I hear there is a new movie out in which he's the star.
I believe our best bet is bio diesel processed from algae. Large amounts can be grown and harvested in the ocean thus not using up our limited arable land to grow fuel.

I don't know the answer - here in Western Europe normal car fuel is taxed so high that a gallon costs 6 Dollars at present, or even more, depending on the country.
In average, a newly built (and sold) car here has a consumption rate of about 32 mpg.

We've already reached Peak Oil, from this point on there is less oil available for extraction than we have already used. We need to start being sensible about when we drive cars, leave lights on, use carrier bags etc etc etc, its as simple as that.
There is an excellent forum at downsizer.net that explores these issues in a very firendly, non judgemental way, and peopel there are making a real differenc to their own quality of life as well as improving their impact on the planet without being at all crusty about it.

you make it . have a 4x4 that i run on bio diesel. i lined up to fish and chip shops that save the old cooking oil for me in 44 Gal drums , i strain the oil through a very fine filter and then add a small amount of ethanol and an other ingredient to stop the oil from thickening on cold nights and hey presto diesel for about $0.10 cents a lit re. The only mod to the car you have to make is changing the fuel lines from rubber to metal braid.

That's simple, we'll start using horses and donkeys again. Also we could walk and ride bicycles. Actually, its not just the USA but all over the world, people are wasting fuel. For example me, I live in Indonesia and people here tend to use their cars to drive to places within walking distance. They can never appreciate things like that untill they are totally stripped of this privilege. Just think for one moment, first they discover fossil fuel to drive our cars and any other stuffs, but they never think for one moment that its gonna run out. Then they discover using water. YEAH RIGHT! Like water is never going to run out either.

I'm sure some other method of powering vehicles will come about in the future. Problem is, it won't be worked on until supplies get low.
And yes, the U.S. is the largest consumer of gas and waste the most gas also. We are set in our ways, while the rest of the world has adapted.
We're complaining about gas prices, but we still have it made. It's still cheaper than the rest of the world. We're just spoiled.

Well I think it should go back to old days , where neighbors knew each other , so that way you can share rides to work to store and plan a once a week trip to do shopping with both family's ,outings .Save gas that way , but I guess we will end up like the Amish ,they get along fine with cars and electric and Big corps.

Have you ever heard of Bio-Fuel?
These are natural fuels taken fom nature's resources like corn, wheat, and even coconut oil!
Bio-Fuels are plentiful here in the Philippines, but crude oil is still the main gasoline here.
How sad... the Philippine economy ignoring Filipino inventions!
I once heard that a Filipino inventor was the first person to mix oil and water....

by the time we have no more petroleum, we will have found/invent other souces of energy already. Our oil can still last about 15-20 years, and there are much more oil deep within the Earth that we cannot get to. It cost more to dig out those oil than selling them.
