I did a little reading on and I think it simple matter of AV company compiling list of all the files associated with Objects(adware, virus , worm) and then checking files on incoming messages against their list......

Well u see antivirus s/w works different in diffenrent operating systems...In windows XP registry is everything once u have hold of it u can do anything u like...most of the viruses do attack the registry editor ...so the antivirus checks for irregular rather illegal registry key entry and if it finds one it reports to u about that...
