The ark was made of wood. (Exodus 25:10) Wood would not last too long. It may have been deteriorated now.

I think so. I just don't think that some ruler or whoever it was that may have found it would break it up and melt it down for the gold. I mean, that is a possibility, but anyone with a brain in their head would recognize it's extreme value intact. But I have NO idea where it might be.

There are all sorts of theories including the idea that it might be in some monastery in Ethiopia.

I suppose it will reappear just in time for the third temple.
