I know this probably sounds gross but I haven't been to the dentist since I was really little, like 4 or 5 years old I think, and I'm 16 now.

Anyway, I've got a couple of teeth that have started to hurt, I'm pretty sure they're got cavities, and I told my mom and she's made me an appointment with a dentist in town. But it's been so long since I went, I don't remember what happens at all.

How long will it take and what actually happens at the first appointment?

Will he do any treatment to my teeth like cavity fillings then and does it hurt?

I've got a chip or a cavity or something in one of my front teeth - can they fix that easily?

Thanks, I'm pretty worried about it and I need to know what I should expect when I go.

Your first appointment will be between 30 minutes and an hour. The dentist will completely examine your teeth and take a complete set of x-rays, and will probably clean your teeth at that time.

He/she will discuss with your mother which teeth need further attention. You will probably have to come back soon for that, because he/she will probably have other patients waiting on your day and will not be able to do the whole job at that time. Cavity filling nowdays is pretty painless, especially if he/she uses alternatives to novacaine (shots) to numb you - like nitrous oxide. That should be discussed too - probably with your mom beforehand. Also what kind of filling to be used should be considered. Some have mercury in them (the ones that last the longest). But some people are concerned about the mercury, and want other types of fillings. The chip in the front tooth can be fixed.

On the first visit he will visually examine your teeth, take painless xrays and probably will give you a good cleaning. That is a little uncomfortable if you have a lot of plaque. He probably will have you come back for the fillings.Alot of dentist do not pull teeth anymore, they refer you to an oral surgeon.Fear not,the worst part is the numbing, however,it only lasts a second or two and then you will be numb. The dentist will fill the cavities with a white substance and he can put a cap on the broken tooth. It will take a while for the numbing to go away but you will be o.k. Thank goodness your mom cares

Often on your first appointment you will be lectured by the dentist for having left it so long, but once you get the blah, blah, they will take x-rays, painless and not so time consuming.
Depending on you dentist, they may well fill some of the simpler cavaties but anaesthetic will be used, minimally uncomfortable and yes not so pleasant but its over pretty quickly.
If you need a root canal, this will often be scheduled for another appointment or 2, again it depends on your dentist.
A front filling is no longer or worse that a regular filling and it will depend how bad the chip is as to what are the best corrective options.
Be prepared for your first appointment to last an hour not including waiting time. Good luck!

First of all, don't worry. The dentist wants to make this appointment as painless for you as possible. He (or the dental assistant) will start by checking your teeth, possibly using one of those small mirrors and a pick. It shouldn't hurt.

If you have any cavities, the dentist will probably ask you to make another appointment to fill them. I just received my first cavities within the past 2 months, and the dentist had me return twice so that she could fill them at separate times. My mouth was numbed, so I didn't feel any discomfort.

So, try not to be anxious, and try to visit the dentist at least once every year for a dental cleaning.

Good luck!

They'll give you a thorough exam at first and take x-rays from different angles to see where the cavities are. They might fix one or two the same day, maybe more. Depends on how much time they have alloted to you. If you have cavities in different parts of your mouth, they'll most likely do one side on one day and the other side on another day.

The dentist will look in your mouth at your teeth, maybe do some xrays, fill any cavities then clean your teeth.
It doesn't hurt they give you pain killers so you don't feel pain.
