I used to have this problem, too. It was actually very easy to end it.
One day I was telling someone about a traffic accident that I had had and I realized that I was grinning and smiling and yet it had been dangerous for me and they were getting the idea it was just a big joke. I just put a very serious face on and continued my story. I felt a lot better because they took it seriously then.
I'm sure you have a serious face. Just look in the mirror and relax. Remember how that face feels and start trying it out on people in small situations. Go up to someone and ask them what time it is with your serious face. I think you will quickly figure out how to put on your serious face when you need it.
But it's great to smile, too! Just save it for your friends and people you trust or people you want to persuade to do something for you. :)

From what you describe, I can tell that you are a very friendly person. Is ok to smile to anybody who come face to face with you and is polite to keep smiling when on stage for presentations. At age of 23 you still can laugh/smiling over a problem I would say is good, but when something sad happen you have to control yourself not to smile cos that might hurt the other persons feeling. They might think that you did not take them seriously. Just like when your parents cold you and in return you smile back, they might think that you r not seriously listening to them, so they get angry. It really depend on situation.
Like myself, I laugh out loud when too much work. I would say is ok to smiling cos no one like to see a sad face.

While laughing at the wrong times might be inappropriate, it is never inappropriate to smile. Smiling is an international act of peace and friendship. I, too, sometimes laugh when nervous however, it is usually obvious to me as well as the other person that it is not a hearty laugh. When that happens, I just apologize, and tell them I'm nervous. A public speaking course may help you. Good luck.

i wouldnt worry i smile constantly and laugh at the worst times but it shed light and humour onto people that are not handling it as well if they can see someone else laughing or smiling it will be easier for them to do it aswell and it wont make them as upset treat it as a gift not a problem

i hear ya...i do the same...it's because i think happy thoughts all the time...some people called it weird others ignored...once my own boyfriend brought it up...i told him if he wanted me to share my every thought i could...if I did there could have been some pretty embarrassing momets for some.... even when i sing a song to myself and my lips are moving ...people think I am talking to myself...so when I had enough I just started saying what i was thinking about...alot of them stopped making jestures and most got quite or left completley

I think we need to learn from each other--I cry all the time for no reason. It's probably just a reaction to stress in both cases.

It is a nervous reaction. You are nervous. From what you wrote it sounds like talking to somebody about your situation might be a good idea.
