BEFORE you get any dog you should read some great books on training. (Try not to pick books randomly - there are a lot of bad books out there also!) These are some of my favorites and you can get them on Amazon.com
What All Good Dogs Should Know – Volhard http://www.volhard.com/
Good Owners, Great Dogs - Brian Kilcommins
Dog Tricks : Eighty-Eight Challenging Activities for Your Dog from World-Class Trainers by Haggerty and Benjamin
Don't Shoot the Dog - Pryor
Training Your Dog: The Step by Step Method - Volhard
Dog Problems - Benjamin
Second Hand Dog - Carol Benjamin
Cesar's Way - Cesar Millan
Also, watch the Dog Whisperer on the National Geographic Channel. Cesar Millan is the best trainer I've ever seen on TV.

Don't get a dog just because it's "cute" - you have to be able to live with its behavior!!! Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money. The best breeders will be members of their breed club, promoting healthy dogs with great temperaments. They should ask you a bunch of questions to make sure their puppy will be getting a good home. If all a "breeder" seems to care about is whether your check will clear, you can be sure he won't care a week later when the pup is dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back.

Whatever you do, DON'T go to a pet shop, a flea market or buy one sight-unseen off the Internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are often kept in deplorable conditions - spending their entire lives in small wire-bottomed cages. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there.

These so-called "breeders" have now figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

If you don't know the first thing to take care of a dog, I suggest you call your local AKC and ask questions on how to take care of a dog. It takes a lot of patience to take care of a dog. You need to know how many times you can bathe a dog. I bathe mine once a week, that's good enough. You need to know what to use on the dog for ticks and fleas prevention. The vet can tell you all that stuff. You need to know how to train the dog, what to feed the dog and how many times and also know the dog's body language when it has to go out or when it wants to play. A puppy won't know on its own to go out and do its business, you have to train the pup. You need to show the pup where it can go to do what it has to do and do that over and over till the pup gets it right. DO NOT yell at the pup if it does something wrong. People seem to think that it is right to do that when it isn't. Just be patient and train the dog as best as you can. If you think you can't train the dog on your own, call the local shelter and ask about training classes for the pup and they will help. Also you need to know when to take it to the vet, as puppies do require a vet visit every 6 months the first year and once a year after that unless you have health issues with the dog. Can you afford it? Dogs require lots of attention so make sure you are ready for it. If you are not ready for it then don't bother getting a dog. I hate it when people think they are ready for a pet, and when they get it they can't handle the animal and it ends up in a shelter, cause they just don't want it anymore.

Take the time and visit any of these websites: The Humane Society of the United States, The American Humane Association, Dumb Friends Animal League, Petfinder.com. Remember a dog is committment for life. Finding your next best friend should be done carefully. Consider adopting a dog from a shelter where they will assist you in finding the right pet for you.

Before you get a dog-read up and get all the information you can on proper care. Can you make the committment? Can you afford it? Can you make sure you will walk and exercise every day, twice a day, even if it screws up your plans? Can you puppy proof you home? Can you not get really pissed if the pup pee's or poops in the house till it's trained? Can you give time and unconditional love ? Think about all---It really is like having a new baby. Consider all the facts and how your life will change. Good Luck! Hope you can do it.

First read about taking care of a dog then make sure you have lots of money for training. A dog that is not trained is a very bad situation!

keeping a dog is a long term commitment. You have to keep a dog that suit your lifestyle. If you are the lazy sort, keep short haired dogs, so that you wont to brush it all the time. Ask the shop assistant on how to take car of your dog. If you can afford, send your dog to a dog school to learn all the good discipline.

Well you better do A LOT of thinking and research BEFORE you get a dog!!! This is the reasone they end up in the pounds!! People get them and do not know what to do with them, or what they are getting into!! Then they dump the dog at the shelter.
