Given the lack of mountians no one is going to be able to do it anyway. If you saw the race today even the guys that were no threat to the overall classification couldn't get more that 40 seconds ahead. If Oscar tried to go on the break the peleton lead by phonak would have just realed him in anyway. Given that losing the respect of the other riders is not worth the effort.

They dont challenge because it is pointless. If someone tried to breakaway on the last day, the leader's team and the rest of the peloton would easily chase them down and catch them. Sometimes someone who is far down in the standings will go for it to win the last stage, but they are no threat to the overall rankings.

Cycling is an old sport with athletic gentlemen. There are lots of traditions, and this is one of them. It is like a parade for the winner actually doing his thing.

If a cyclist were to challenge this tradition, all the other cyclists would shun that cyclist. That would likely end his career.

It does seem weird to an outsider, but traditions are powerful.

Also the other bikers would not allow somebody to go out to a lead. If the person did the other riders would gather him back to the pack, and hold him there.

good question.

i don't even like the sport, but what i DO like is the fact that another american is going to win! that's GOTTA piss off the frenchies! they thought one of their guys would be able to reclaim french glory now that lance armstrong is retired only to have another yank step in and snatch victory from their snooty, little hands!!!!! i absolutely LOVE it.

how's that taste, frenchies??!!??
