There does not appear to be one specific origin of the term. But if you just imagine a time when horses were the major form of transportation, you can probably relate better to the expression. A horse used for transportation is domesticated. A wild, untamed horse in strong and powerful. It is untrained and will not obey the wishes of man. It's another way of saying nothing could keep me away.

Seriously, it means he wants to be there so bad that even if horses were pulling him (they were about the strongest things around when this saying was coined) they still couldn't make him leave.
