My cat's name was Rocket and, this was when she was smaller than she can remember, and she had a horrible time being a kitten for the first 2-3 months. This was before we adopted her. She was abused and she had gotten her front left paw stuck in the fanbelt of a car. They thought that they woud have to amputate her paw but they used the funniest alternative. My cat had acupuncture!!!!! We thought that if we called her Rocket, she would remeber the past, or we would. So we named her Kitty!!! Have you ever adopted a cat and renamed it for sentimental reasons?????

I always adopt cats, and I almost always change their names. If the cat is more than a year old, I commonly keep the original name because I don't want to confuse the kitty, but I will often start in with a nickname and use both names for the same cat.
Examples are:
My kitty named Doggie was Bowser, She was 5 weeks old and had been beaten and kicked by a group of horrid little kids who were being idiots. I changed her name to change her associations. She never hears Bowser anymore. She responded to Doggie by instantly purring and playing when the name was said.
Caleb was 5 when I got him, so his name stayed the same, but he was Caleb Prettyboy and eventually became just Prettyboy in the two years that I had him before he died. he chose the name by responding to it better than his original name of Caleb.
I see nothing wrong with changing kitties name. I think they associate it with the new home and the new love.
Besides, someone who can't keep the kitty, has no business giving it a name for all time. They didn't earn the right.

I adopted a cat who was named Lizbeth (I'm sorry for anyone with that name--- I mean no offense) and I felt that not only was it a horrible name, but it was a horrible name for a pet!! However, the real reason I changed her name (to Lily, by the way) was because my boyfriend at the time had an ex named Liz.

No worries about the name change-- I personally believe that cats know that they are being called, but choose not to come. They'll come when they want to... and it doesn't matter what you call them. Plus, like dogs, a lot of pets don't respond to *what* you call them, but *how* you call them. The inflection in your voice (generally higher) is what tells them to come. So, basically, you could call it sh*thead with a loving tone in your voice and it would still come. :)

BTW- Did the acupuncture work? Good luck and best wishes to you both.

Well, we didn't adopt a cat but we found 2 cats last year while we were looking for our lost cat.

Of course we renamed them. One of them was a male the other a female. The male was after the female and scaring her all the time. I put a box upstairs and she stayed there for 3mo. Everynight I would go up and sit and play with her and talk to her. She was so tramatized from being lost she was scared to death. It took ALOT of patience but she is now downstairs with us and a part of the family. She still scares really easy when people come to the house, but she is the sweetest thing in the world. She is an older cat and it took her awhile to get use to her name. The male cat learned his name pretty quick but he was a much younger cat. I'd guess about 6 mo. old. We also got a kitten during this time so we were trying to teach 3 cats their names all at once.

It's amazing tho, they all learned who they were over a period of time. And I love them all!!!

I just adopted a siamese male from the streets. I have no idea what his name was...but now his name is Pozer. Sorta a long story behind the name, but it fits him....it was either Pozer or Stunt Double....Pozer is easier to call him indoors with. He definately knows his new name and seems not to have a single problem running in the house to it. I think its okay to rename an animal for sentimental reasons. Some animals just have personalities that suit them to a tee and the name should match it.

Now if I could only not call my new puppy "Nuckin Futs".

Yes, we've renamed a cat we adopted, but I'm not sure it was for sentimental reasons. Our siamese was "Sinatra" when we got him, as he has beautiful blue eyes. Our daughter was too young to appreciate that choice of names, and picked a name that was more in her vocabulary. The cat is fine with it, and responds to his newer name with no problem. They adjust!

Yeah I got my kitten a few months ago and I wanted to rename her because she had a bad past aswell. But,at first she wouldn't respond to the name.I think you should put a few pieces of her cat food in your hand and put it near her mouth,it makes her feel secure because that is wat the mother does.oh,know something else that might make her feel better if you have a older towl and a bottle put some hot water in the bottle, and get a clock that ticksput the bottle and the clock inside the towl and put it in her bed were she sleeps the warm bottle is like the warmth of her mother and the ticking clock is like her motheres heart.I hoped I helped a little if you need anymore advice you can e-mail me.

properly i first named my cat even as i replaced into 2 and that i named him Jumnji from the action picture reason i loved it a lot and he had a brother that replaced into named strawberry because of the coloration of its tail so if i have been u i ought to easily call it in accordance with what it does/feels like. So purely go away it because the cat for a wile till u get to are conscious of it and call it in accordance with the way it acts

Yes, my brother gave me a female Himalayan mix named Flip. I thought that was the stupidest name for such a pretty cat so I renamed her Angel.

sure! my friends had found a tiny, abandoned, sick stray and named her Lucky. When I adopted her I renamed her "Tina". I didn't like the other name and also felt I should give her a name. She got very quickly used to her new name.

Also a dog I adopted from shelter I renamed him from Rocky to Aryan
