It really depends on your objective. If you're swimming to get fitter then I'd say do 20 at once and push yourself to improve your stamina (i.e. if you begin to feel tired at 15, push for 16, and so on). If you're doing it to maintain your current level of fitness and the aim is more recreational, then do 2 x 10 because you won't stress your body.

I used to be a competitive swimmer in my younger days.

it is really about the time. The New Zealand government health recommendation is 30minutes a day of moderate exercise, which can include a brisk walk. Half an hour of swimming is great, and more even better. So don't worry about splitting the day, aim for half an hour. If you manage ten lengths in half an hour but want to do more then by all means go again later in the day. A lot of people have trouble finding the time to exercise once a day let alone twice as it is inconvenient. So don't worry too much.

Actually it doesn't make much difference either way, you exercise just as much doing two sets of 10 or one set of 20. I would think if you did 20 at once though you would be more tired and less apt to want to do 20 the next time.

If you're going to do one or the other -- I'd say do the 20 all at once -- it will raise your heart rate, and keep it elevated for a longer period of time -- which is better, because it will result in a healthier heart and a lower resting heart rate. Furthermore, this will increase your muscular endurance -- because you're doing more.
