The answer is yes, you can upgrade to a newer transmission. The main difference between your transmission and the newer versions is the torque converter and torque converter seals. The new torque converter has a little more "clamping" power when it locks-up. If your not having any problems with your current transmission, I would leave it alone. However, I would take it to the dealer and have the computer updated to the latest version. This will raise the torque converter "lock-up" speed from approximately 38 MPH to about 52 MPH. This is THE best thing you can do for the transmission, and IMHO, is what caused the majority of Chryslers' transmission problems! With the old calibration, the torque converter was locked-up at too low a speed, overworking it, and eventually causing it to slip, and hence, destroy the transmission. With the new calibration, you're hardly ever in lock-up, except at highway speeds. At this point , the converter has enough grip so that it won't slip. You may lose about 1 mpg around town driving, but you can buy a lot of gas instead of a $4000 transmission!

Is there something wrong with the tranny that's in it? Or are you just wanting to upgrade it?
I wouldn't mess with until I had to. Cost too much for my blood.
The rumour mill works even in the car section of life. Ask some one that knows what's going on. A local shop or a dealer should be able to help you. A couple of quick phone calls and you'll have the answer you want.
