It is similar to the belief system called "American exceptionalism" that holds that America is a divinely-graced city on the hill that has an exceptional place in world history. It seems that all people, and by extension all cultures, want to believe themselves to be unique and exceptional, and to place themselves above others.

If anyone knew the history of Abraham then they would know both were sons of him, through Jacob and Esau. The Jews were Gods chosen people but God also said he would make a great nation out of Esau, and I don't have a right to say anyone doesn't have God.
The Jews rejected their messiah and are not the chosen anymore. The chosen are true believers
in the Son of the Living God.

The Jewish people have been to the 'funeral' and 'birth'of many a nation. They have endured the most harshest of trials and tribulations over thousands of years that should have seen them extinct like so many others that died out due to lesser trials. God is keeping true to His promise to these people and they are still a nation and a testament to His word. I think this is also an example of God's enduring love even though they do not accept His Son (or Him in the flesh). This speaks of the fact that He never gives up on anyone (it is man who gives up). God does make examples of many people, but for those who don't understand or want to, will always lean toward their own conclusions. I don't know about the thought process of being superior - they may think this, but they have suffered in His name more, I think, than any other nation and still do in many ways.

Each people thinks its the superior race. They'll oppress others due to this. For instance, when the Jews invaded Palestine and evicted thousands of Palestinians, they were probably thinking that their white skin is superior to the dark skin of those people who were already living there. Indeed, the English and their allies who gave billions of dollars of help to Israel in order for it to win some wars thought the same thing. Now, the other side is called a side full of terrorists. It's subjective though. I support neither side of the conflict, but it seems that the Israelis are an unjust group.

The answer to why do we believe it is because God says it, several times in the Bible.
The real question, however, is what does "chosen" mean. It doesn't mean their better or smarter or superior. It means they were "chosen" for a special purpose.
I have seen their history unfold, and to me it looks like their walk with God as a nation is a perfect example of the walk with God each and every human being experiences.
And, of course, we believe God chose their nation from whom to bring our Messiah, since I'm a Christian.
I don't think being "chosen" has been a walk in the park for them, but I think God will make it up to them in a big way because of His promise to Abraham about both his sons offspring being great nations. It's just that Israel's children seem to have had a very special burden to carry for the sake of the world.
Just my opinion.

God's choice of the Jews does not demonstate the superiority of the Jews, but God's soverignty. None of us are worthy of being chosen by God. It is God's choice who He picks.
Three is no need to be jealous of the Jews. The reason they were picked is because God wanted a bloodline to produce the Messiah which would unite all nations under one God, and bring peace to earth. They were also picked so they could produce and preserve the Word of God, which contains God's instructions and wisdom. This Word of God was to be shared with all nations. This has happened.
God can use anyone however. So open yourself to God, and let Him use you too. First, be open to what God has already taught, and obey what it says. God wants love and peace to prevail. If you can do that, then you are being used by God as well.

The Jews are God's chosen people but that does not mean they are superior.
God started the Jewish people with just one good man: Abraham.
God made a covenant with Abraham and promised him that he would bless him and his seed.
He kept His promise and Abraham's decendants prospered and became a strong people.
Later God gave them the law through Moses and gave them land to possess. God's blessing for the Jews was not unconditional though. When God gave them the law, he said that they would be blessed as a nation if they kept it, but that it would become a curse for them if not!
Sadly, they chose not to follow God and turn to other god's instead. They abandoned the law and their God and thus lost their country and became once again slaves.
Part of the promise to the Jews, was the promise for a saviour, the Messiah.
In Jesus, this promise was fulfilled. God told Abraham that through his seed, all the nations of this earth would be blessed. Through Jesus, salvation became available to everybody, Jews and Gentiles.
So what about the Jews today, are they still God's chosen people?
Yes, they are. God promised He would bring them back to the land he once gave to them and it has happened!
God does not go back on his word so every promise that was ever given to the Jews, still stands.
What does that mean for people who are not Jewish? Are we worth less to God?
No, because we too, can now become a part of God's family.
Paul says in his letter to the Romans, that he is not ashamed of the Gospel because it is the message of salvation for the Jews first but also for the Gentiles!!
If you accept Jesus as your saviour, you are just as much a child of God, as every Jew could ever be.

Yes it does.
BUT, AS A WHOLE,
the Jews refuse to accept Jesus, and because of this,
AS A WHOLE,
they will end up in hell. There will be Jews in heaven, just as there will be persons from the Middle East, Africa, South America, etc. and believe it or not, even some persons here in the United States.
God's
TRUE
chosen people are
ONLY,
the saved, and
NOT,
any particular race such as the Jews.

Because that's what it says in the Torah.
It's almost the same as Islamic people wiping out non-believers.
