Of course guys care. How much depends on how close were were. My immediate response would be, "I'm sorry to hear that. That HURTS!" or words to that effect. The would be different depending on how close we were.

Of course I care if a girl tells me she doesn't want to be my friend anymore. My immediate response would be to ask, "Why?" If it's because of something I did (or maybe didn't do) and I can apologize to perhaps repair the friendship, then I will do it. If, however, it's something she's deciding based on where she is in her life, and where she wants to be, then I'll accept her decision. Oh, I suppose I'd miss her for awhile, but our life's paths are not always parallel. There are times when they fork, diverge and other times when they converge.
