There is actually less suffering per person today then there has ever been, what's left is due to the normal bog standard causes:
Greed.
Ignorance.
and Fear.
It's been the same since the year dot.

There was always a lot of suffering in the world - today it's just more obvious.
The root causes don't change much; Buddha explained them well thousands of years ago.
On a personal level, people don't think much about it; instead they spend a lot of time trying to run from their suffering by keeping busy with "important" things and ignoring their inner selves.
On a bigger scale, as in the Matrix movie, people's energies are being manipulated and used to support the interests of others without a lot of regard for their welfare. Unless we're lucky enough to crawl or somehow be pushed out of this dependence, we might die without ever knowing ourselves.
The Dalai Lama's answer is simple: "My philosophy is kindness." Christ's similar answer: "Love your neighbor as yourself." This is the ACTION message of all the great teachers. Until people listen, they will continue to suffer.
As Lennon said, the revolution starts with you. "You better change your mind instead." By avoiding the causes of suffering, you gain the inner tranquility to understand yourself, and then you'll see all this for yourself.

I would say that lack of respect has a lot to do with it. There is a lot of it going around between the Muslim, Christian and Jewish faiths it seems. Muslim extremists don't respect the right of the Jews to live in the land granted to them by the UN. Zionists don't respect the rights of Muslims to have shrines in Jerusalem. Fundamentalist Christians don't think anyone believes in God unless it is done in the way that they approve. It is really sad that three religions that trace their roots to the same beginnings and the same God are the ones who are fighting each other rather than working together to make the world a better place.

The root of all problems faced by man and beast is MAN. Never has their been a more corrupt, selfish, destructive force on earth that could wipe out, or create items to wipe out, everything on the planet and not think twice about it. We are the cause of all our problems, I guess that's what makes us the 'intelligent' species. Good question!!

Satan, Adam and Eve are the cause of all the suffering in the world. It is because of them that all are born sinful and thus all men die as they have all sinned. Be joyful, however, because Jesus has given us a choice to be free of the sin we inherited and thus live forever. By choosing Jesus as our father rather than Adam and by doing God's will, we can be forgiven.

Very simple GREED. The world or simply planet earth produces enough to feed, shelter, cloth and educate all the people on this planet equally. Greed by individual countries by placing a particular "level"/"standard" for their individual populations. This causes some countries to be very rich and some to be very poor. The biblical scriptures are very clear that God will provide our basic needs certainly not our wants. Who makes the most out of credit cards...............................? Certainly not the poor. What happens one hour after a rich person and a poor person dies.........................................? Perhaps the cost of burial and Heaven and Hell.
