DO have any budget? If you are looking for a luxurious one, I reccommend the Empress Hotel- located near shopping in the city centre, and features the "Lanna Thai Heritage".
If you are on a tight budget, try the Suriwongse Hotel (Chiang Mai), which is situated near city centre, good for shoppers, as night bazaar and shopping complex are just within walking distance, as well as providing delicious Thai-Chinese food.

There is a beautiful hotel in the middle of the walled city, easy access to all the tourist spots. It's called Tamarind Village, I believe. It has the word tamarind in it, and it's the one inside the walls. I've stayed there twice. It is truly lovely, and very quiet. The architecture is traditional to that area, but not the kind you picture when you think of Thailand. It's white stucco. Each room opens onto the garden. It's only two stories high. It has a pool and a restaurant, and just down the street about a block is a temple where you can get cheap massages.
The last time we stayed there we got a deal for about $50 or so.

There are many good hotels in Chiangmai. Depends on where you would like to be, in the town centre or in the surrounding areas. Chiangmai is in the mountainous region, so you can get mountain resorts around.
In the town, besides the D2 Hotel, there is Amari Rincome Hotel, Baan Orapin Boutique Hotel, Rydges Tapae Amora Hotel, Sheraton Chiangmai Hotel, Tri Yaan Na Ros Colonial House.
Check www.asiarooms.com for choices available. Even those outside the town centre.

There are many questions to be asked before your question can be answered correctly. Hence if budget is high go for four seasons, if lower, try checking in to one first and then scour for another. I stayed at a low cost called Downtown Inn on my first visit. Rooms are cheap (1200 baht) and a suite is only 800 baht more. Once there u can look at the alternatives. The majority of the guests at downtown were from Holland and Germany. Its located near the night markets and other touristy spots with German, Benelux and English pubs/restaurants nearby. Hope this helps . 4 Seasons is a little out of the way from town but offers proximity to the other touristy spots like the Elephant farm etc.
