Your cat needs to be at least 6 months old before neutering. They stop spraying as the sex hormones are changed by the neutering etc. However some spraying often still occurs.

7 weeks to before 6 months. The younger the cat, the faster it will recover & less complications it will have. If you wait until they start spraying, it is very difficult to break them of this habit. Also if you have other cats that mark their territory, they can learn this from them even if they are neutered early. The thought that cats should be neutered after maturity is a fallicy, and you can read about experiments done that prove this at the source below: I have 3 male cats. They are all neutered and none of them spray. I feed them a high protein/fat low carb dry food with no corn and meat as the first 3 ingrediants. The one cat I was given when morbidly obese is now normal sized as are the other 2, so neutering does NOT cause obesity.

6 months usually. Males spray to mark their territory, that can be outside or even in the house if they smell other cats have been there, they live w/ other cats, or are dissatisfied w/ their litter boxes. Outside males mark also, cats usually have a wide range of territory outside, which needs to be marked often. I adopted a stray (or should I say he adopted me). I was not going to get him neutered, he was already about 1 1/2 years old when I took him in. He kept getting in fights, his urine was extremely strong smelling, and he drove me crazy trying to keep him in when he would get hurt from fighting. So, now he is fixed (he is 3 yrs old, I just got him fixed a month ago) and WOW what a different cat. He can stay in for a couple days w/ no problem, his urine does not have that strong odor anymore, he is more relaxed & calm. I do notice though that when he goes out he still marks his territory, I think that is more habit than anything because he was so old when I got him neutered. His behaviours were already a habit for him.
Good luck.

The same question i was having until a few weeks ago.Usually neutering is done for male kittens and it seems that the best time to neuter a cat is before it reaches puberty . That would be when its about 6 months old. That is if u dont want kittens.but it seems that neutering ur kitten is safe at any age if ur kitten is Perfectly HEALTHY! I would prefer 6 months tho!
And about spraying,it is most common among male cats.It is just their way of securing or marking their territory.Ofcourse male cats are very territorial. The behaviour is completely normal.

1 year is the best time, males cats spray to mark their territory. I have heard that they can continue to spray after getting nutered, but it isnt common. One thing, cats dont rub to show affection they are rubbing to mark, they have glads behind their nose, in their mouth, and by their butt.

Neutering can usually be done within a few months, as far as spraying it's because a cat is territorial. Some other cat or even a dog has been in his area.

Cats should be spayed between 14-16 weeks, ask your vet for their oppinion. Also, cats can still spray after they have been fixed. However, if you get them fixed before they ever start spraying, they usually will not do it. (this is why, the earlier the better!)
