What if you fall off?

this is funny, sorry, your question is vaild however. Okay first of all you might fall off the ship. It is a big and tall ship in the ocean so rescuing you will be harder than say in a swimming pool. But there are other problems like leaks or damages during battles. If you are on the lower deck and it floods, you will have to swim real fast before they seal the entire level. They also have drills constantly for that, so swimming during those drills is essential. Also there are underwater salvage and retrieval missions possibly, which will require someone with good water navigating abilities. Hmm I guess thats all. Just ask more if u need to.

An old joke - my Father spent 32 years in the Navy and he always maintained that the prime mission of the navy was to keep the water out of the ship. The others missions were just extras.

Yes, they have ships, but do you really want to be on a ship in the middle of the ocean and not know how to swim? What if the ship goes down? I think it's a pretty logical question!!!

As dumb as this may sound, you need to be able to swim in case you go over the side. We had 5 people go over the side last deployment. Being a officer, we have to swim and from what my enlisted just told me, you have to be able to swim to pass basic training. After all, we are a ocean going branch of the service.

No, due to government cutbacks, they have dingies. You were being recruited as an engine. You were going to be thrown out of the boat and were going to swim to push the boat along, while the gunner stood up with a bb gun. You were going to be an integral part of a patrol boat.
