just wondering about coz i see it in movies and tv shows ok

411 is the number you call for information, just like 911 is the number you call for an emergency. it is not just for black people.

It is, as others have said, the US number you dial for information... hence the use of 411 just to mean information or, more usually, gossip.

It's amazing how self-obsessed some of the American answerers on this site are - just because the US uses 411 doesn't mean the rest of the planet does!

I first came across this from Mary J. Blige's seminal debut album "What's the 411?" - why would I have phoned the US for information?

OMG when people say "whats the 411?' they are asking whats going on, or they are asking for information about something. Gosh :p

Another expression you may have heard is "five-oh" for the cops. This comes from a cop show called Hawaii Five-O, very hip for its time. The Five-O supposedly is derived from Hawaii being the 50th state in the USA.
