Sometimes I want to live in the Blue Ridge Mountains. I love the beach, but where is there a beach that's not over-run with people?
Yeah, sometimes I think industrialization - for whatever else good it did - took much from us.
During a sermon, I heard a preacher quote a magazine from the 50's that speculated that in 10 years time, modern man would have so much free time because of all the work machines would save us from doing. Yet with all our conveniences, we're still so busy! Ironic, really.

I would like to be a recluse a couple months out of the year - summer. I know exactly where I want to build a log cabin one day and use it as my escape. It would be a two hour drive to the nearest good sized town in Maine and an hour from Montreal so I could still get what I needed.
Everyone needs to get away at some point just for their own sanity. However, I think for the most parts human beings are meant to be social.

I used to think that. I found the idea of being a 'hermit' moderately romantic... I still think it's great to get into nature every now and then.
But I find a lot of peace in the big city too. People-watching is a great activity if you're in a café on a busy street. I love to think about how each of those people passing idly by has a whole life with dreams, desires and loved ones... I like to think about how there are so many of us and our lives intersect in seemingly random ways. It gives me a sense of 'the big picture' to be among the swarm of humanity.

Yep. Once a month I wish I was living in a cabin by a stream with only women around me. I really do think women had it better during biblical times when they had to stay away from the rest of the camp during thier periods.

Constantly. If I could, I'd take leave at this very moment. I want to go on a thru-hike along the Appalachian Trail ... it only takes a few months to walk the 2,000+ miles.
But who would make my car payments while I was gone? Why can't I just put those on delay ... =(

I do that a few times every year.
It does one good.
Check out the prices of weekend getaways. You might be surprised at how easy it is to save enough $$$ for it. Treat it like rewarding yourself for working hard.
Find a babysitter (if need be), and just GO. GET OUT!
Come back refreshed.

Have you read "St. Antony" by Athansius? Antony was the first desert monk in Egypt who felt the same way you do. He started a trend called "monasticism" that was strong through the Middle Ages.

I did...and moved to Tennessee...LMAO.
Seriously, our lives are only as complicated as we make them. I can't take off for days at a time, because I have a house to pay for and a dog to take care of...my choices. I managed to find ways to cut out a lot of the day to day crap that wasn't important, and find a way to enjoy my life...hope you can too!
