I need a small family car or 'mini' with a 50l full tank minimum and very reliable like German or Japanese cars. Which models should I consider? I want a one or two year old one. thanks

as you have cardiff in your nick i hazard the guess that you're in the uk and are talking about 6000 to 9000 sterling. get a two year old polo or a four year old golf. any volks that age, you'll get a good ten years use out of it, if not more, and they will never ever let you down, no matter how you abuse them. when my last golf was dying at the age of 15 from bad maintanance, it still brought me from dublin to brittanny and back uncomplainingly, and it was in such a bad state that when i finally retired it i had to give it away because it needed so many new parts. my brother had recently replaced a 15 year old polo with an eleven year old one and is still yearning for the old one. my current golf - the fourth volks i have - is four years old and running like a mofo, and from experience i know it'll continue to do so for a long, long time. i openly admit that i'm not impartial on the matter of cars - a friend of mine once said i'm not really aware of any other makes than vw - but you can be sure i wouldn't be buying them over and over again if i had anything to complain about with them. so - get a volks, they're sturdy, they're stylish and they'll make you feel good! :-)

As my little girl always says, "there is never a reason to buy any thing else but a VW"

She's just 8! Try golf, diesel if you can as the mpg is over 50. re-sale is really strong, build quality is superb and parts easy. (Gwent VW Audi in Newport, German and Swedish in Bessamer Road). Go and have a sit in one at somewhere like Car Super market either Newport or Cardiff but I wouldnt buy from them. They are only really selling finance. Main dealers will be most money or you could try Malcolm Scarborough. I have bought about 4 cars from him and they are always good. Find him on www.nationwidecarsearch.co.uk

All the best and check for a full service history.

i'd go for japanese if i were you. they're reliable but don't forget french cars either. i got my wife an old battered renault 5 years ago, it was just meant to last her for a couple of years. she sold it in the pring and bought a 2 year old meganne. they're ladies cars but really comfortable and they last.
