"The needles and equipment used are also sterilized. One reason for this is because the needles are standard medical products that are sterilized during manufacturing. Also, there is a chance that the prisoner could receive a stay of execution after the needles have been inserted as happened in the case of James Autry in October 1983 (he was executed eventually on 14 March 1984). Finally, it would also be a hazard for those handling unsterile equipment."

Hypodermic needles are sterilized during the manufacturing process, and thus shipped in a sterile package.

When a physician procures new needles, including the physician who administers the lethal drugs of execution, the only needles he can get are sterile needles.

The people using the needles don't sterlize them, they just come that way from the factory in the lethal injection kit. Yes there is actually a kit.

Why do they embalm bodies before cremating them? Same deal. My unofficial answer is it's because not sterilzing the needles would gross out the people giving the injections and could open the door for a frivelous lawsuit that would stall the law enforcement process.

Because someone might have sneaked in and put an antidote on the needle... you know, some potion that will counteract with the killing drug even with the smallest amount possible on earth. Yes, we're talking atomic level here. But sterilization quickly kills this antidote... so there... Hahaha.
