a mark up language is generally a text based language that is interpreted by a web browser to instruct the browser to access particular formating for that particular mark-up language. HTML is the most common mark-up language. It stands for Hyper text mark-up language. Others include XML, which is a more general version, this stands for eXtensible mark up language. These are just examples.
