We have a 2 year old Basset Hound, who is a picky eater. Can we add a raw egg in with her food everyday to keep her coat shiney?

In doing a google search I found this inormation:

http://www.phouka.com/dogs/dog_kind.html:

Raw Eggs -- Eggs are very good for dogs. In fact, they are the most concentrated, valuable form of protein that a dog can get, as long as they are cooked. Apparently, raw egg whites bind to the biotin that a dog ingests and prevents it from being absorbed. Cooked eggs do not do this. If you do feed eggs, it should not be more than 1 per pound of food.

Then I found the oposite info and she made sense too, so go there and read what she says about it and then decide which works best for you.

So many good questions!
Ok, there is bacteria everywhere. Dogs have an amazing immunity system specifically designed to eat all manner of bacteria. And a healthy raw fed fed dog manages those bacteria without a problem.

E-coli, salmonella, etc are found on raw chicken, but those nasties are also found in your fridge, in your sink, on your floor, in your backyard, in your car, on the footpath, down at the park, and perhaps in your bed! Interestingly, the only cases I have heard of dogs dying from e-coli or salmonella, were dogs fed commercial dog foods.

The most important thing is to wash your hands thoroughly after feeding your dogs, and even after cutting up meat for your own meals. Our digestive systems are not quite as robust as our dogs, so we must protect ourselves.

I use a spray bottle containg white vinegar which I spray about when I need some disinfecting.

I have been feeding my animals a raw for several years, and have yet to have a problem with bacterial infections with my dogs. They are so darn healthy, they are never at the vets! Well, except for when I got them micro-chipped.

Additionally I have raised a number of litters all successfully on a raw diet.

Sorry, I know this didn't help much, but I have been told by several veterinarians that dogs have a higher tolerance to bacterias that would make us very sick. So, I would probably go for it.

Dogs actually have naturally occurring Slamonella and E. Coli bacteria in their mouths. They also have a level of antibodies in their immune system that render them virtually immune to both if at reasonable levels. I agree with the once a week frequency, possible supplemented with fatty acids (omega-3). If you are still worried, try any oatmeal based shampoo and KalaHealth Dermatrix for Dogs and Cats. I use both on my Retriever that doesnt like eggs and she has a coat that feels like rabbit fur. Try the link below...

keep it down to once a weeks, until you get the coat shiny, then 1-2 times a month as a treat. Better to give a supplement, proteins and acids need to be balanced in a dog's diet.

Most vets recommend twice a week.

If you feed a premium kibble, her coat will improve as well.
Canidae, Wellness, SolidGold . Innova, Wysond are all excellent conditioning kibbles.
You will find them at local pet supply shops.

Premium kibbles cost more per bag, but less per month, and are really a wise investment for a healthy dog with a healthy future,

It's best if you boil or poach the egg first, but yes. I give my dogs one boiled egg each, every few weeks. That's plenty to keep their coats in beautiful condition.

Edit: Oh, yes, and as Chetco said, a high-quality food will help immensely, too! Mine get premium kibble, as well as home-cooked food as well...

I don't think once a day is good. I would cook it and only make it once a week or more. I would give it brewers yeast for extra nutritional supplement. Just sprinkle it on her food. You can find it in the health food section of your grocery store or a health food store.

Absolutely not, raw eggs can carry bad bacteria. The risks far outweigh the benefits. As a previous poster said, there are many dietary supplements that will give you the same result

NO! They could get salmonella. No person or animal should eat raw eggs. If you want to keep the coat shiny, you can buy some omega-3 fatty acid capsules and break them open into the dog's food.

Yes. Just be extra careful that it's very fresh and doesn't sit in the bowl before your dog eats it.
