Im talking about characters that are christian, catholic, muslim, etc. Do any try and find out about the religion and see if its true?

Yes, every actor or actress studies their characters assiduously--even if they don't agree with them personally. Sometimes a disagreement causes them to give a negative portrayal of their character.

It probably depends on how much that religious identity is relevant to the character. For example, it doesn't matter what Rambo's faith is - he's there to blow things up and kill people. OTOH if an actor is, say, playing a Catholic priest in a movie which is set in a seminary, they'd better be sure to get it right.
