LEAVE THE LIGHT ON. He is afraid of the dark. Is that a problem for you? What kind of a mother are you, anyway???

I still am afraid of the dark in some instances and I am 26. When I was 14 I saw a movie that really freaked me out and I slept on the couch in the living room by my parents door for a few weeks, maybe a month.
If you make a big deal out of it or family members play jokes on him by turning lights of, scaring him etc... it will only make it worse (it did for me at least).
Is it a new thing or has it always been? If it is new try talking to him but don't badger him. It may just pass in time, like my sleeping on the couch phase.
Take him shopping for a small lamp if you don't want his main light on. My son has a lava lamp he sleep with on.
A fear is a fear as irrational as it may seem.

I suggest trying to find out WHY he is afraid of the dark.
Is he willing to talk about it? If not with you, you might try with someone else.
Did he ever watch a scary movie, never quite get over it, and now he's worried about imaginary things? Monsters, bogey men, that sort of thing? Then he needs reassurance about those things not being real.
Has he ever been threatened or bullied? Crime victim?
Does he tend to be insecure? Easily frightened?
Something else you might try is letting him sleep in a room with an older boy or man, just for reassurance, until the underlying problem is resolved.
Night lights are problematic. They actually interfere with sleep and growth cycles. May cause or exacerbate nearsightedness.

I am 27 and still afraid of the dark. For some people it is just natural. For others it doesn't bother them. Let him leave a light on.

I am 30 and still afraid of the dark. I have a soothing-sounds bubbler that changes colors from Avon that I use and it helps me. My son is also very afraid of the dark and it is nothing that he seen from me or felt for that matter.

give him a night light and let him keep it until he feels that he no longer needs it. I used to be afraid of the dark also.

I'm 20 and still afraid of the dark. It is not anything that is going to hurt his ability to function as a human or in soceity so do not worry about it. You learn to deal with it.
