Animism. The worship of spirits. Neanderthals and Cro-magnon men practiced Animism. It was practised in Ancient Japan many thousands of years ago. It was practised in Africa further back than that. Some very ancient African cultures still practice it. Stonhenge is a monument to Animism. People have never fought over animism. It just developed in it's own way where it developed. Of course the known world was a lot smaller for each peoples 10,000 years ago. Pretty much just you and the surrounding lands.
Zoroastrianism, the main religion of ancient Persia, was the first monotheistic religion. The first polytheistic religion may have been of the Ancient Egyptians.

the legal historical method which is used to validate history with written text and written eyewitness accounts would have to point to Judaism since the oldest know written documents are from portions of the Old testament bible-mainly the Pentateuch or first 5 books of the Bible which was given to the Jewish people. Selfishness is the key reason for people fighting against other people other religions and even among the same people or same religion.

Paganism. In ancient times, man was more connected to the Earth and it's cycles. But Atheism has probably been around just as long; Once organized religions began, that's where the fighting comes from. Because even the pantheons between the Greeks and Romans was fought over. Earth-based religion is coming back, because we have lived incarnations where our Mother Earth has suffered at our hands. We must love one another, regardless what creed. Or we will kill ourselves again, and we won't have the internet. Or airconditioning. But we won't have religious hatred, humans killing humans in the name of God- so maybe it's a good thing, destroying civilization as we know it.

The oldest recorded religion is Hinduism. Some will debate that the oldest religion however is monotheism (Judaism before it became Judaism), as there were never statues and such for today's archaeologists to find.
In Islam, God sent a rock down to Adam to use as a guide for prayer. It is said that there was confusion in some of the descendants who took it to mean that the rock itself was to be worshipped, starting polytheism.

I sometimes can't believe the ignorance and arrogance I see on here.
The oldest form of spirituality is called Animism - the belief that everything in the world, from people to animals and plants - and even stones have a spirit and a type of lifeforce. Though it may be very different from our own.

Some form or other of Paganism is the oldest religon in the world. Though it should be known what passes for Paganism today is hardly close to what it was back then and should more accurately be called "neo-Paganism".
