First, if the concept of a logical fallacy is foreign to you, here it is.

A logical fallacy is an error in logical argument which is independent of the truth of the premises. It is a flaw in the structure of an argument as opposed to an error in its premises. When there is a fallacy in an argument it is said to be invalid.

Here are a few examples of logical fallacies.

Situational Ad Hominem: You just say that global warming may have non-human causes because you work for the oil industry. Don't show me those made up facts of similar planetary warming on Mars!

Ilicit Major: God is love Love is blind. Stevie Wonder is blind. Stevie Wonder is god.

No True Scotsman: No true Scotsman has their Scotch with ice! But Mr McCool has Scotch with ice and he's from Glasgow! McCool's not a true Scotsman!

In my statements in talking to JW's about their religion, I've noticed that they always resort to using logical falllacies. Why?

Since Yahoo Answers only allows me for 1000 charachters, I made a temporary webpage that quotes, debunks and completley destroys Derek's argument.

If Derek's afraid to go to the site, then it sucks to be him.

He's only proven my point even more.

And to Firehazard, consider this: what if you're wrong and Jehovah rewards me for my cynicism while he punishes you for following a religion?

Pascal didn't think about that idea when he made that same formula for proving god's existience logic 300 years ago, and neither did you.

Look up "Pascal's wager" on wikipedia.

Lilli, your answer is long, heartfelt and least to say, interesting. Unfortunatley for you, it's completley off topic and does nothing to bolster your argument. That's called a "non sequitur".

Mary, if JW's really followed what the bible said word for word, they would preach that the world was created in 6 days. Last time I checked, the JW's weren't young earth creationists.

If they could be liberal with biblical interpretation of creation, is it possible to say that they're liberal with their bible interpretation when it comes to the crucifixon, the blood doctrine and limiting friendships with non-members?

And also, hypotheses on origins are always going to be off the wall. We have no scientific proof regarding our origins.

The idea of an invisible man in the sky creating everything 6000 years ago is about as logically provable as a big blast of energy turning everything into matter.

Your anti-intellectualism is quaint to say the least.

Good for you!!! I agree that they are lost and not a really good religion or cult or whatever. However they are dedicated to their beliefs and maybe God will forgive them and love them anyway, I hope.

You yourself are using "subterfuge" or more simply put "lying." By this I mean, by obfuscation or muddying the waters, you obscure the facts and get people confused, then when you point people in a new direction, they don't notice that your off on a new tangent or subject. Nice, but it just won't float. No way, no how.

Fact: What you "call" an Illict Major is actually "FAULTY LOGIC" nothing more, nothing less. Or you could say, "All dogs are black, all bats are black, therefore all dogs can fly." While the logic seems reasonable at the first second or two, it soon gives way to more "factual evidence" that says otherwise. Just because it walk like a dog and barks like a dog, doesn't make it a dog.

Jehovah's Witness do not use Faulty Logic, they use the Bible. While I am not a J.W. I do have tremendous respect for them and will say that I have NEVER seen them give any answer from anywhere but the BIBLE. Try to catch them and see! I'll BET YOU! As far as I know of, there are no error (that have been proven) in God's word. And remember, everyone has good days and bad days, so be careful of grouping everyone in one boat because someone had a bad day! After all, you yourself have been proven wrong HERE! Illicit Major my *ss!

Jehovah's Witnesses use God's Holy Word, the Bible as their only source. They hold to the Bible as the standard for all their beliefs.
I can't help but be reminded of a scripture found at Matthew 11:25.Jesus says:"I publicly praise you,Father,Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intellectual ones and have revealed them to babes."
What Jesus is pointing out here is that Jehovah has caused his purposes to be revealed to those with sincere and humble hearts(1Cor.1:26-28).
Thus, simplicity is a key feature of Bible truth.

The Jehovah's Witnesses are a group of people that follow The Bible exactly as they understand it.
Jehovah's logic is far greater then your own,and hence forth You are pointless in Your attempts to correct Him.

For the sake of arguement I ask you...If Jehovah does not exist,The Jehovah's witness lose nothing....But if Jehovah does exist...Then you lose everything....So tell Me...How do you like that gamble?

Very nice examples of fallacies. Thank you. However, I was hoping you could use some of our own fallacies so that I could better understand the definition of the word. Pity. I'm still in the dark.

From my knowlege, they are the ones that actually lives by the Bible. They use the bible's direct quotations when discussing subjects. They never come up with off-the-wall ideas of how things are created, likemost philosophers.

DUDE YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!!!! Thanks sooooooo much thats what ive been looking for. One time they told me "Jesus is a lesser god (over John 1:1) " to which I said " What God isn't worshiped"? Because they say only Jehovah is to be worshiped.

It doesn't fit the definition of a God!!! There is NO god that isn't worshiped--it doesn't fit the definition!

Peace,

I havn't found this to be the case, moreso they argue using false premises. such as God removing his authority from mankind.

Thus calling christ a liar, by denying the gifts he brought.(mainly performing miracles)

for the same reason christians, muslims, mormans, pagans etc use them in defending their mythologies. Fear of the unknown, and pointlessly clinging to false hope
