We did help them by creating Nafta wich sent thousands of well paying american jobs straight to Mexico but a country that is so corrupt cannot capitalize or take advantage of such tremendous opportunities because the corruption takes the profit away before the people can get to it. If the people were allowed to profit from these types of jobs they could spur the local economies wich in return would spur the society for the better. The trickle down theory works but if the corruption catches all the trickles then nothing comes from it. Same thing happens to forests wicht recieve no water, they dry up.

Have you even ever been to Mexico? I don't just mean the resort or beaches because that is not Mexico at all. Every year I go to the real Mexico. And every year the situation is getting better. This country has no business in Mexico nor did it have any business in the middle east. Oil hit the presidents interest hard that's all. So what do you think . America replaced Iraq's government so hell you probably think " WHY NOT CORRECT THE WORLD ". Well not everyone thinks the way Americans do. Travel more it will make you less ignorant. Don't take it the wrong way take it as advice.

Since the world is full of corrupt governments, the US would have a tough time helping them all, so your best strategy is just to try to set a good example. After all the US system has gotten pretty corrupt, too.
Mexico's biggest problem (I am a resident myself) is that unlike the US they have not had a constitutionally limited government. The country has been ruled by one group or another of elitists except during brief periods of revolution. Their constitutions have not been strong enough nor respected enough to protect the people. Sadly, the US is going the same way and needs most of the same structural reforms.
Actually, Mexico has benefited from its bloody revolutions as the politicians do not go too far out of a healthy respect for their history. They do not allow anyone to have guns, for one thing, except the criminals always seem to manage. Since in the US you are allowed to have guns, it is hard to imagine that you let the politicians get away with so much.
The fact that Mexico is the 13th richest is not important. With the US, more money for the government just feeds the corruption. My grandaddy used to say that people who had more corn were sure to have more rats.

The problem is that wealth is only among a select few and those are mainly the politicians.

As long as, conservatives are ruling, nothing will change for they support the system of corruption. Fox is a conservative and since his time in office we have had a huge influx of illegals, because he only helps the rich, while the poor fall through the cracks.

The new president, Calderon, is a repeat of Fox. Calderon is pro middle class and the wealthy. They hold the power. If US would step in, it would create more problems then it would solve. US depends on Mexico for crude oil, we don't want to lose the source of cheap crude oil.

Its a complicated issue that wont be solve for quite some time...

mexico in fact isn't that poor as many people think, but sometimes the government doesn't try to civilize old towns and turn them into cities. It would really be a bad idea for the US to interfere with the Mexican gov't though, mexico and the US have good relations so far and you wouldn't want to mess with that. The US gets valuable resources from Mexico like silver, petroleum, oils, gold, and other stuff.

The biggest mistakes the U.S. has ever made center around trying to solve the internal problems of other nations, e.g., attempting to force people to be free, and such. We need to solve our own problems first ... if that's a brilliant success then others may choose to copy ;)

Someone once said that "people get the government they deserve". It sounds callous, but it's true also that silence=assent. Gandhi showed how powerful non-violent protest can be in effecting sweeping changes. If people do not do this for themselves, how will they accept outside interference, however "well-intentioned" such might be?

Mexico is #9 on the list of countries that have the most billionaires. Mexicans need to help themselves get out of their own mess.

Gee, I thought that the world was sick of America sticking it's nose into everyone's business. It is up to the Mexicans to take their country back. We just need to send them back there and quit letting them come here to avoid dealing with the problems in their own country.

It would take too long. Besides, that would take using our army to wipe out their drug lords as a part of the solution, and it is just possible Mexico wouldn't like that.
