Have a party that isn't around a usual theme like princesses, Barbie, etc. - make it a color theme using her favorite color. If you choose a specific theme, you are very limited in what you can do in the way of grab-bags, games and the like. A color-themed party gives you more creativity because there are lots things you could use!

Here are two ideas for a cake: either buy one that has plain pink icing and let the guests decorate it with candies (saw that on Barefoot Contessa); or you could buy cupcakes with pink icing, set out candies and other edible cake decorations and let the guests decorate their own cupcakes.

As for food, go to www.foodnetwork.com and click on the "Party Ideas" tab. They should have some ideas on food for a child's party.

A tea party - have all the girls wear there favorite princess dress, Set up a "fancy" table and serve little sandwhiches, veggie sticks and lemonade. Make your own ice cream sundeas are a fun dessert idea instead of cake. Bring out a tub of ice cream with a candle in it to sing - then have everyone create their masterpiece. Have bowls with m&m's, sprinkles, chocolate, caramel & strawberry sauce, whip cream, crushed oreos and anything else they like.

Read the book "Fancy Nancy". Have them decorate tiarras as a craft (glitter, paint, little glue on gems all wotk well). Have them do a mini fashion show and let them dance to music. For party favors give out beaded necklaces (hand to each guest as they arrive), boas always are fun too, a special tea cup (Tuesday Mornigs often have these inexpensive), a cutsie picture frame and send a picture of them with the birthday girl along with the thank you note. Other grab bag ideas - go to the dollar store or Target $1 spot - and get bubble bath, bath salts, etc...

There are many online stores that carry paper goods and party favors (try http://www.oriental.com and http://www.iparty.com/Tea-Party-Pack/Catalog.cfm/iParentId/0/iProdID/114709)

google "party ideas" there are some great sites out there with all kids of info, printouts, recipies, ect...
I let my son who just turned 5 decide on what he wanted his theme to be and gave him a few options on location for him to choose from. All he really wanted was to play with is friends so he opted for a double birthday party with is brother at a park. I just rented the pavillion, decorated, and cooked up some hot dogs.

I just had a luau party for my five year old because there were both boys and girls at the party. (didn't think they would appreciate a princess theme). I found the Hawaiian translations to all of their names on http://www.alohafriendsluau.com
set up a table with their names on it. Found cheap sea shells, did a pinata in the shape of a sandal, played Hawaiian music and did the limbo, did sand art for them to take home. They had a blast!! On the invitations I told them to wear their favorite Hawaiian shirts too.

My mom is the "Queen" of birthday parties and I'm now trying to follow in her footsteps. I don't know if you have a DollarTree store near you but they have everything. My mom once gave me a polka-dot party with plates with dots and then solid color plates, napkins, plastic-ware, etc, in coordinating colors with the dots. You can also choose any theme and just a few of the expensive themed items and then coordinate with solid (cheaper) accessories (plates, napkins, etc.) to save money. Pizza is always a great staple for a party. Some games: A pinata full of candy, pin the tail on the donkey, catching cheese balls in your mouth (yummy and funny to watch), throwing bean bags through holes in a piece of board (I had a clown board but you can probably paint your own to coordinate to what you want, such as Strawberry Shortcake), etc. Grab-bags: my mom let me and my sister take regular sack lunch bags and color them ourselves with whatever coordinating picture we wanted. It was creative and inexpensive. We filled them with candy bought in bulk, little yo-yos, chapstick, hairclips, mini-brushes, etc. You could use stamps or stickers to decorate anything and everything. Have fun!

Here are some games that are a must have at all B-Day parties
1. Toilet paper game-
get the 24 pack of TP-3 kids to a group,2 rolls of TP the two have to wrap the one like a mummy and race to the finish line

2. tie the donut on the string
they all LOVE this one
tie a donut ona string hang it acording to childs size-no hands! they have to finish the donut-1st one to finish wins

3. and my favorite of all-make sure you have your camera ready
take some paperplates-on each plate, place a peice of gum (bubbleyum) radomly and cover with whipped cream
again -NO HANDS- have them lean and search for the gum with their face and chew -first one to chew all the gum wins (really 1st to blow a bubble -but they are 5!)

We have grab bags-usually from the dollar store and make "bird sead" ( fruit loops, raisins, and M&M's mixed together)
Good luck-if you need anymore email me

Have a fashion show party. Get a lot of fancy clothing, shoes, hats, makeup, etc.... Get someone you know to come and take pictures of the kids. Get a runway made and have lights and music.

I am going to do this for my daughter when she turns 8 in two years.

How about a party at Toys R Us with all of her friends?
Not too over the top...
I have a 5yr old boy & he had a blast there.
Call them for pricing.
Not too expensive.
I too am a single mother!
Good luck!
