see my previous ? regarding abortion.regardless of your political, religious, moral or ethical background is preventing conception just as "bad" as abortion? (please note the quotations i am not placing blame or otherwise, i want as many view points as possible)....many believe (and just not Christians') that sex is for the sole purpose of multiplying. Sexual Pleasure is a subnote. what do you think? is preventing the conception of a child like playing God? on the other hand if contrceptives were non existant what would our population be...10 maybe 20 Billion....answer honestly. this is a serious question.

If contraceptives are a form of aborrtion then so is abstinence!! in both cases you're preventing something that HASN'T HAPPENED.

Here's a bit of basic science for people who don't know what they are talking about: There are different forms of contraception. Some work by preventing the sperm and egg from joining. Others work after that has already happened and a zygote (the first cell of a distinct human life) has formed.

Contraceptives that prevent the zygote from forming should not be objectionable to anyone since they do not kill anything with a complete set of human DNA. Eggs and sperm cannot grow into new individuals without first combining. No one complains when they are individually flushed down the toilet.

Contraceptives that work after the zygote is formed are a different story. They do end a life that is capable of growing into a fully-functioning human adult. Some religions consider terminating such life to be immoral because they believe human life at any stage is sacred and has the right to live.

In my opinion, that is wrong. A set of human DNA is not what makes a creature's life valuable and grants it the right to live. Instead, the thing to be considered should be its consciousness. Any life form with that is self-aware and has the ability to learn should not be wantonly destroyed.

Humans are the most notable example of this, but it applies to many animals as well. In a few years, it will also apply to robots and artificial intelligences.

Exactly where does consciousness begin? That is nearly impossible to answer. However, the one thing necessary for it to exist is a mind. In humans and animals, this is the brain. For robots and AIs, it would be a computer. With computers, we have the ability to scan and analyze all the stored data and we can know for certain that modern computers are not self-aware. It is not possible to do the same with an organic brain.

So, where should we draw the line for when abortion and contraception become immoral? In my opinion, that point is when the brain of the embryo begins to devolop. After that point, it is impossible to know when consciousness is reached and killing a conscious lifeform just to make life easier for someone else is completely immoral.

Birth control is for the prevention of a pregnancy. Same as it will be the pill, the patch, the iud, or tying of either the woman's tubes or the guys parts.

Birth control is not like abortions, only the morning after pill is the only thing I think is like an abortion, because if you get pregnant and take that pill you will abort your child, and dont anyone hand me a line and say it is not a child. Once the seed is planted it will become a child. God said be fruitfull and multiply, I did my part and stopped after 2 children.

Yes some forms of contraception are a form of abortion. Like Norplant and the morning after pill. There are others. They do not prevent conception but implantation. If you are married then natural family planning is 98 to 999% effective if practiced correctly, and church accepted by us Catholics. Some of us choose to leave that option open to God. This is called being open to say YES to life and one more soul. If you are not married then you should not have sex. Simple. Life is life. I work in a nursing home and I can tell you that those who are handicapped enjoy their lives as much as us "normal" ones perhaps more so. Do you think they would prefer to have someone chosen to rid them of it?
Peace Be With You,
Debra

I would say no because it prevents the sperm and egg from ever joining together. So if the sperm and egg have not joined to gether there is no baby. Birth control tricks the body into thinking it is already pregnant by the increase of hormones in the blood. There are other ways of preventing pregnancy besides prescription drugs. One is called "Natural family planning" and I know many people who use this method and it works quite well. But one must want to take the time to do it correctly to prevent pregnancy

It takes 2 people to make a baby, and contraception underminds a man's input in the process. Woman have been givin the freedom to use contraception on their own and have sex without the responsibility of bringing a child into the world.

A life isn't a life until the egg and sperm meet. So no, using a contraceptive to stop that from happening is not abortion, regardless what the God Folk say.

No, contraceptives is'nt a form of abortion. It prevents the sperm from combining with the egg. Once the two has combined, that is a life form. Terminating it would be abortion, of course.

No, contraception is not the same as abortion.

Contraception prevents the conception of a child.

Abortion destroys a child already conceived.

Any method of not letting the natural consequences of sex is wrong. By the way sex should only happen in the context of a marriage - one man and one woman.

Firstly, sex is not just for procreation. it is the ultimate expression of love and oneness between man and woman and procreation is just a part of it. Contraceptive is as good as penicillin or aspirin. Use it well for healing and use it wrongly for killing. God made us in His image and that includes using our brain to be good managers of the world He entrusted in our hands.
