Chocolate is always toxic, but fatality is due to how much they get and how big they are. Semi-sweet and dark are the worst.

Grapes and onions are toxic in large quantities, grapes/raisins can cause kidney failure, onions cause anemia.

ALL over the counter meds should be considered toxic, animals do not metabolize meds the same way we do, Tylenol, Motrin, Advil etc can kill a pet very quickly. Same goes with prescription meds, you would not believe how many people give their pets valium or xanex, than call the ER vet I work at and ask if it is ok.

Anything high in fat (cheese, hot dogs, meats etc) should not be given to dogs because they can cause pancreatits. Dogs have been domesticated to stand dog food, and good dog food is well balanced.

Dogs should be on healthy foods not found in large pet stores or in supermarkets, but in smaller, quality pet stores. Some foods that are good are AvoDerm, Merrick, Chicken Soup for the Dogs Soul, Solid Gold, Innova. You can check Whole Dog Journal for the annual list of the best foods. You can also supplement with "human food" such as chicken, turkey, duck, fish, veggies such as sweet potatoes, peas, zucchini, carrots, fruits such as watermelon, apricots, bananas, etc. Some carbs are also good to mix in such as rice, potatoes or pasta. A nice meal would be chicken, rice and peas. Foods that should never be given are chocolate, onions, raw garlic, macadamia nuts, raisins and grapes. There is a yahoo dog nutrition group that you can join.

Chocolate is deadly to a dog! I read this some years ago at the Animal Shelter they had a letter posted about it that i read! Alot of people don't know this and i have had people say they have feed it to their dog?? I wouln't take that chance !!! Also I have read that ONIONS are bad for dogs too, it does something to one of the organs in the body! can't remember were i read that but you can ask the vet if you like. I am sure there is some plants that could hurt them too. Chicken Bones are bad for a dog too ! because chicken bones splint and can get stuck inside them and not get digested and besides that they can choke them to death. I've been told that you shouldn't give dogs any table bones but i do give mine pork chop bones,ONLY the big bones not the small ones because they can choke on the small ones or not chew them up and get choked!! growing up we feed our dogs everything left over after we ate !!???

Someone said they wouldn't sell it if it were bad, that's isn't necessarily true since Pedigree and Alpo are fully of horrible ingredients for your dog, but they still sell it. Dog food isn't nearly as regulated as it should be. Oftentimes companies use cheap filler ingredients to add weight to the food and spray the food with oils to entice dogs into eating it. This is common with many of the low quality grocery store, department store, and even some of the petstore dog foods. Some really good dog foods are Innova, Canidae, and Wellness. These are made with human grade ingredients with no grains, fillers, added fat, or sugars. Buying one of these dog foods would be easier than making your own dog food and probably cheaper, but you'd be getting the same benefits since the ingredients are of such a high quality. And I wanted to add that many vets have no idea about what is in a high quality dog food. They don't really teach classes in veterinary school about dog food and what should/shouldn't be in them. Many vets will simply suggest you buy what they sell in their office(usually Science Diet) and that is never a really high quality food.

the safest way to go is to feed your dog ONLY dogfood and NO people food.. I say this from experience!! I have a dachshund who my family used to feed dogfood and people-food. She ended up getting VERY sick.. I took her to the emergency vet, and she had to be placed on an IV overnight b/c of an enlarged pancreas and other problems arising directly from feeding her people food. $1500 later she was ok, but it was not worth putting her thru that to feed her people food.

As for chocolate, my aunt is a vet and swears that it is DEATHLY for dogs. Also, the vet told me that any processed foods like bread are bad for dogs. If you must give them people food, the vet said plain rice, chicken and cooked or raw veggies are fine for dogs.

Hope this helps you! sorry i dont have a link.

I heard that chocolate is poison to dogs. Also, keep the ibuprofen away from them as well, some dogs love the smell of them and will eat a whole bottle given the chance.

Oh, and too much bread (like a whole loaf) can make your dog explode.

Cooked meat and bones of any sort is considered undesirable as dog food due to the problems it can cause with their digestion and possible internal injury due to splintered bone.

Basically dogs are like humans we like meat the most and so do they. Just that we can tolerate sweets and candy and fats. But they can not as much. I do give my dog twizzlers and one of them has eaten a big peice of chocolate and it not hurt her but that was luck. Very few swwet will not hurt them but the best thing for them is meat and some veggies.

never ever ever give a dog chocolate, or anything that contains chocolate. onions are also bad. u know, some pet shops (like PetSmart) carry doggie treats that look similar to chocolate, yet it's not chocolate. it has an ingredient that tastes a lot like chololate. it looks like chocolate too ! and it smells like chocolate...u would never know that it's subsititute chocolate. they look just like chocolate chip cookies (the human kind, lol) u can buy them in a plastic box. i almost ate one !!! eeew. i don't know if these stores carry them now, but they most definitely have those around the holiday/xmas season.

so get one for your pooch !! he (she) will thank u for it ! yum...
