Buddhists are aware of 3 paths or ways of being and living: desire, nondesire, and the middle way. Their ultimate goal is nondesire which is practiced by only a few who can isolate themselves from society, living off donations and handouts that others give (which in turn blesses the donator). They leave their families, work, etc and give up ties to any and everything, expecting this will get them off the 'Wheel of Karma' and they won't have to be reborn resulting in Nirvana or reuniting with the Divine. Some can do it, most can't.
The middle way is 'take it or leave it.' They live and function in society and have respect for others and produce quality work and goods knowing what they create or do will return to them in one form or another. They live the moment and are satisfied with it. Wise Buddhists (and there are many) plan for the future adjusting their lives accordingly. The sad thing is they are taken advantage of by more desire-filled people and countries and don't defend themselves as well as they should because they practice nonviolence.
The path of desire is not followed by many Buddhists because they view it as taking away from others, disturbing the equalibrium of nature, and as an anchor to whatever it is they want, holding them back from their true purpose or self and their soul's progression.
Hope this brief summary helped. I once lived in a Buddhist country, too and loved it.
Enjoy your stay!

Because the Buddist belief is that desire is the root of all evil and that if we eliminate desire we can achieve peace. But look at facts, In Cambodia, it is 98% Buddist and yet in this country alone there is more money brought in than the entire national budget!! Buddism is an ethical theory, like a mirror it has the ability to show us whats on the face but the mirror cant change us.

Cristianity is not necessarily being happy. Christ himself did not live a happy life and died a VERY unhappy death.
Actually, Christ even WARNED everyone that following him would mean lot of misery, so don't say you were not warned!
Cristianity is about doing what's right, regardless of the consequences, just like the founder did.
If buddhist are truly happy I can only wonder how do they manage that, living in a world where there's so much wrongs to fix, thereby leading of course to unhappiness if you try to fix those wrongs.

Maybe because Buddhists require more simple things than Christians to achieve happiness.

Buddhist seek peace through meditation. They have accepted their imperfections and strive to find the path of enlightenment. They seek the original self and know that karma is the ultimate equalizer of life. As you sow so shall you reap.

they are not happy, they are passive. that's it. I live in Thailand, a buddhist nation. It's a religin that blindy accepts any religion with apathy and indifference.
Also, wanna see a happy buddist? Ever seen those pictures of the really old monks? They look like they haven't seen anything happy in their lives!

Because Buddhists are investigators not justifiers. I wouldn't call them happy, per se, just they are forever searching for ways to be satisfied with their own lot.

because they think they are in their own little world and can do anything just because they worship statues. because if all my sins were forgivin just by preying to a statue and i could whatever i wanted, i think i would be happier too. but im fine not doing anything i want to.
