There's several things you can do. You could start by trying a basic anti-dandruff shampoo (with zinc pyrithione as an active ingredient, i.e. Head & Shoulders.) If that works, count yourself fortunate.
If it doesn't, the next thing to try is a coal tar shampoo, like Neutrogena. If that doesn't work, try something that has salycilic acid and/or tea tree oil as an ingredient. These shampoos are marketed under a brand called Giovanni.
If none of those do, or if you've tried them all, the mother of all anti-dandruff shampoos is Nizoral. That stuff is about $15 a bottle, but it works like nothing else, being an antifungal agent. Lasts a while if used properly, but due to its cost, reserve it only for the worst outbreaks.
Alternatively, you could try the good old home remedy of dumping lots of vinegar on your head, massaging it into your scalp and letting it sit for a while. That will work, although it'll be kind of unpleasant and your head will smell like vinegar for a while.
Good luck, dandruff is evil.

there are several things that may be the cause of this.
1-you may not be drinking enough water or eating right. poor hydration and nutrition can show up on your skin and scalp. on your scalp it may take up to a month to show though. so if you went through a time where you didn't frink a lot of fluids-not including soft drinks-then you can get dandruff a month later
2-you may be using the wrong shampoo and conditioner for your hair type. the thing most people don't understand is that shampoos and conditioners go by your scalp for the most part. using a very strong shampoo everyday can cause your hair to dry out and be bad for your hair. (ex. shampoo for oily hair when you really don't have oily hair. even just washing your hair everyday can cause problems depending on your hair type even if you are using the right shampoo for your hair. don't stick to the same shampoo every time you buy more. your hair can get "immune" to that shampoo and not react to it like it should. use finger tips not nails when washing.
the "oil" that everyone hates is actually what is supposed to keep pur hair healthy. washing it everyday strips that oil. another thing that people don't realize is that by washing your hair everyday is sending their oil glands into overdrive. they know when your hair doesn't have oil on it and when you strip it off everyday then they "freak out" and start producing even more oil.i don't wash my hair everyday and sometimes not even every other day, but my hair has stopped producing so much oil from this.
i used to have a problem with dandruff but i have found a way to kick it in the butt. i start with a shampoo for normal hair and wash for about 30 seconds. you don't have to have bubbles for the shampoo to work. the longer you keep the shapoo on your hair the more it takes off. then i squeeze out all the water that i can and i use a mosturizing shampoo like dove and i let it sit while i shave my legs and wash my face. when i rinse the conditioner out i use a slighty cool water than what i used to wash my hair with. this seals the hair and keeps the moisture in.
3-also coloring and styling your hair can cause this. you should wait at least 6-8 weeks until coloring your hair again and longer if it is a blonde color. the chemicals(mostly amonia) in the color strip your hair and open the strand so they take the color better. that's just they way they work. darker hair colors do it too just not as bad. if you blowdry your hair everyday then use the lowest heat setting. it may take longer but it is way better for your hair. also have a leave in conditioner or something like frizz-ease to put in your hai before you start. try not to use to many holding products like mousse and hairspray because then you just want to wash it out at the end of the day and what good does that do if you are going ot just put it back in your hair the next morning?
~a few ways to hide the dandruff until it goes away is to stay away from dark colors and to use a dandruff shampoo. but don't use that everyday either. it can start to do no good after continuous use just like any other shampoo. if it is really bad and the really strong dandruff shampoos don't kick it then you should see a demotologist. it may be worse than dandruff. you could have exema(which is cause by dry irritated skin) or psoriasis(A noncontagious inflammatory skin disease characterized by recurring reddish patches covered with silvery scales.) both can be treated and cannot be spread to others.
whatever happens good luck!!

Listen up, make sure you don't have something else. Try tea tree oil or something else to treat fungus. I know it sounds crazy but follow me. I had the same problem, my best friend let me know about this stuff and it totally changed everything. Dandruff companies would love nothing more than for you to waste your money on their crap. GNC sells it or any homeopathic stores will carry it. Good luck.

Try a dandruff shampoo (Selsun Blue, Head & Shoulders). If it doesn't work, check with your doctor. You may need prescription-strength stuff.

Try cutting down on fats -- especially homogenized ones like milk. The more milk I drink, the worse it gets. So I wear light tops and wash my hair daily and avoid letting a comb scrape my scalp. Its called psoriasis.
