I'm of the school of rolling, too. I've traveled extensively all my life and in my experience, you can get the most stuff in one suitcase if you roll it.
Another space saver is to put little things into your shoes - like underwear, socks, jewelry, etc.

Flat.
Make everything as flat as possible with as few folds as possible.
It's the folds that take up the space. Rolling things up is THE worst idea after throwing stuff in from across the room. A roll is just a massive fold. Whoever started to promote rolling things up as a way to pack suitcases must have been a suitcase seller. It's the surest way to need more cases.

Firstly put a thicker layer of clothing on the bottom so to keep everything protected because the luggage will be tossed around by airline staff. Keep things that might clink together apart with other clothing. Make sure anyhting that might leak be put in a plastic bag or two. I use the corners for my shoes (which are also stuffed with socks or underwear and then bagged if they are used) so that they push up against the back of the suitcase and keep everything from shifting from any movements. Finish the top layer with more clothing for more protection. Borders and edges should be stuffed with rolled up items like pj's or tshirts and underwear or socks. This method basically keeps everything in the center with this 'small wall' of protection and nothing shifts or breaks when the luggage gets tossed around. It has worked for me for years and in all my travels have never had one broken item (I always pack everything becuase I don't like carrying bags on to the plane so even my delicates, bottles, fragile items are all in the suitcase).

1) Make enquiries if you have a weight limit (most airlines do).
2) Work out how much you can carry without getting exhausted.
3) Make a list of all the items you absolutely need for the journey.
4) Weigh your suitcase or bag (empty).
5) Select the items from your list and weigh them.
6) If they are within the weight you are allowed, all is fine and you can pack right away. If you have to much, you will have to drop a few items from your list.
7) Make sure you carry your list separately from the suitcase in your pocket, so you have proof of the content of your luggage in case it might get lost or stolen.

I put items like coats/jackets, long skirts and trousers in the bottom of the suitcase first, starting the waistbands at alternate ends.
Then I put the rolled-up items in the suitcase, followed by any jewlery/accessory/toiletries cases.
Last, I fold the ends of the trousers/long skirts over the other items in the suitcase. It keeps trousers from getting creased or wrinkled.

I tend to section the suitcase, heavy items (wash bag, shoes etc) at the bottom (near the wheels) then have two side areas for jeans, trousers etc, the other side for tshirts, tops etc then the middle I pack underwear. On top of it all I will lay a suit folded just in half so as not to crease it too much.

Heavy stuff on the bottom (near the wheels). I just neatly fold everything so I don't have to iron once I reach my destination. Remember, airlines recently put restrictions on suitcases stating they can only weight 50 pounds or less.

I love the packing cubes and mesh envelopes from magellans.com and travelsmith.com. Roll everything up and pack them like cigarettes. You can stack the cubes or put the envelopes side by side. Also pack ziplock bags of different sizes w/liquids, meds, makeup & some empties for dirties.

There are little suitcase bags that you can organize all of your clothes in. I like the rolling method but it can't be so tight that they get wrinkled.

rolling everything up isn't good as it wastes space.fold everything and make sure they're flat.to avoid packing unnecessary clothes.tell yourself you are going for shorter eg.if u are going for 2 weeks tell yourself you are going for a week,or if you are going for a week tell yourself you are going for 4 days or something.(pack essentials of course like socks and underwear)i do this because i always seem to wear the same clothes on holidays.
