I go with holding my breath since it works for me.
The most important thing is to get your mind off the fact that you have the hiccups. That's why some of these elaborate rituals of drinking water in odd ways, etc. and starling people work so well. You're so absorbed in the task the hiccups often resolve themselves.

Sorry, all of these are wrong...medically.
Hiccups occur from lack of oxygen, hence why you get them when you are drunk, or drink or eat something too fast. It is a muscle spasm that causes quick strong inhalations. The way to stop this is not to stop oxygen further, as the old wives tale says...it is to feed your body more oxygen. Take 3-5 very deep breaths -- inhale the count of 5, as deep as you can. Hold it in for the count of 5, exhale slowly to the count of 10. Do this 3-5 times, and the hiccups will be gone!

A spoonful of sugar often helps. The main thing is, whether it's a gulp of water or whatever, the person should hold their breath while it goes down.... until they feel that bubble rise in their esophagus. That's the hiccups going away.
Sometimes, taking an aspirin or tylenol with the gulp of water helps, because it relaxes the muscles in the esophagus.

what you have to do is get a full glass of water, a pretty big cup. plug your nose and drink the whole cup of water, or at least most of it. you will feel like you are drowning, you are supposed to feel that way. dont cheat and breathe out your nose, just bear it as long as you can. it may sound wierd, but your hiccups will be gone.

Keep reading questions here.
Seriously, I read somewhere that if you have the hiccups...if someone asks you a really stupid question, (but it has to catch u off guard), your brain stops to process it. Thus getting rid of the hiccups.
I've never tried it tho, so I don't know for sure if it works.

Take a sip of water upside down, by putting the lip of the glass against your upper lip while drinking.
The pressure of swallowing the water upside down does relief it.

Have someone close off your ears with thier fingers, then drink one glass of water without taking a breath. The pressure differential will make them go away..sometimes.
It works for me anyway.

Drink some water (or any liquid) and when you swallow, put your arms up in the air. My nephew told me about it a year ago, and it has seriously worked every time I've done it!

I take a spoon, depress my tongue, and then swallow water. It relaxes the esophagus and gets rid of my hiccups every time.
