Obscene stories, foolish talk, and coarse jokes--these are not for you. Instead, let there be thankfulness to God. Ephesians 5:4

It is possible to talk, horse around and have fun without using obscene and abusive language.

Let your friends know that you would appreciate it if they would not talk like that around you, but even if they do, you can still refrain from doing it yourself.

Something else you might consider is expanding your circle of friends... perhaps to include young people from a local church youth group... this will increase your opportunities for social interaction and at the same time should decrease your exposure to the type of language you are trying to avoid.

Understand that as Christians, we cannot afford to live in a bubble. We are called to be living examples to the world around us (A city that sits on a hill cannot be hidden). So don't completely avoid those friends... just maintain your integrity when you are around them. Who knows... your example may even lead someone to Christ.

Best wishes.

There's so much stuff you go through and so much you have to deal with when your a christian in High School. Though people may tell you its ok, its just a joke, the word speaks the truth. The fact is what you feed your mind is what you become. I know what it is to partake, to fall away from my first love and struggle to return to a truth that seemed so far away.

You don't have to partake in that kind of behavior. It is your decision. Stand up for your love of Christ against the desires to be part of a social standard that in reality is disrespectful and a negative part of your life. Don't fall for the social norms.

The social norms is the biggest attraction towards sin, because as a part of society, we want to connect with our peers. Find peers that are positive...about life, about people, about your future. And if you find it difficult speak to your church leader/ counselor.

Final thing is you are young. You are learning and growing in your relationship with God. So though some people may say "Jesus hung out with sinners" don't forget that was during his time of ministry. Surround yourself with whats good, but if you do fall or fail don't let the guilt kill you, get back up and keep walking. Good Luck to you. Stay Blessed!

Why don't you pray about this for a while and see what God wants you to do. My bet is soon enough you will have friends that you can joke with and still feel right with the Lord. Then maybe you will become witnesses for those at your school who need Jesus. God bless you. You are doing well by asking this question, much better than I did in High School.

I have the same problem, and I'm much older than you.

What makes it hard is I crack people up -- with my jokes and impersonations. HOWEVER, there is a way to make people laugh without being filthy or coarse, and I need to walk that line.

Ultimately, I use my humor to let those who aren't Christians realize that children of God HAVE a sense of humor, and aren't "baptized in lemon juice"! It's ok to be happy and joyful and carefree.

As for the "guys" speak foolishly, you have to walk the line between accepting them for who they are, but not being LIKE them. You shouldn't be ashamed or apologetic for having a moral compass -- just tell 'em (if they ask), "Aw, guys, it's just not my thing,"

Ask the Lord for classmates who are virtuous and will enable you to walk an Upward path.

You have to let go of the hard-line view of morality and the bible.

I have a friend who is a missionary - at first, he was much like you, and many other people - he thought so many things were a sin. But through his religious studies and actually going out and experiencing the world, his views changed.

Besides - that's not all that guys talk about. You can be active in the conversation without stooping to immoral levels.
Or, simply, you can hang out with more like-minded individuals, if it really bothers you that much.

I am a christian too. And what I do is just don't and on to the conversation. You can laugh at it and also let them know that it is distastfull to you, just by the way you act. And I'm sure you're not their friends just for the jokes talk about something else or joke. There are things equally funny that are not nasty or whatever.

You can ask them to tone it down. If they really are your friends they can respect that. If not then look for some like minded people such as yourself.

You can mess around and be funny with out being crude or vulgar.
Just remember this, preach the gospel all the time and when necessary use words, meaning the power of example can be very strong.

Good luck.

you can talk and you can mess around. you just need to draw the line on what is sinful and what is not. dont be afraid if you accidentally cross this line as we are all human and are bound to screw up somehow. besides, the bible verse doesnt mean that you cant have "foolish talk" and such. It is suggesting that you do not put your social life before god as god is the most important. In the end, it all comes down to one thing: did you repent? if you realize when youve crossed the line and repent then you are doing what you need to be doing

You can joke around and still be a Christian. You can say the same things without using the really bad words. Just the fact that you are concerned about this shows you're a great kid.

You're not alone when you follow the commandments of God. Don't let Satan make you feel alienated. You'll be blessed. You can participate in wholesome conversations without using crude language. Be a good (Christ-Like) example to others. It can catch on.
